Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish.

Piscesean Spring

Silence slipped past blade of the paddle

slicing the stillness of morning waters,

smooth and tranquil, glistening wet,

dripping the dazzle of a trillion diamonds cast

by the whimsy of the surreal mountain sunrise.

His patient tones beckoned boarding

with careful instruction, lovingly delivered.

Ripples from our silent craft lapped hungrily at the shore

gliding in tune to the trance of lake’s lure and

peanut butter and jelly breakfast,

as shadows overlaid the shallow shoals and catch promises

beneath the swimmer-less docks of Spring.

Bamboo arched over his shoulder in deliverance

of open bailed lessons, the snap and whir

as finger pointed in release to bubbling targets close to shore.

Elusive pisces temptation in red-headed chartreuse

sinking just enough and wiggling below the surface

in tune to his deftly timed wrist jerks, studiously observed.

Perseverance and practice defined, taught,

thrown and reeled in artful succession

until the trawl-ending surprise

of the catch…

the fight of weighty pole entrusted to me.

First fish, once captured and admired,

shared in unforgettable smiles…

his wish fulfilled and locked in memory.

Large-mouthed, splendidly alive and sizeable,

iridescently scaled in sequined verdigris beauty,

painstakingly unhooked.

Released again into the wild…

another lesson of his astounding love,

the undeniable respect in the way he

observes, pleases, and cossets all things.

His only wish… to be loved equally

and nurtured in return.

We are preseason intruders in this haven…

privileged to the quality and opportunity of time,

enriched by her offerings,

fallen captives of life’s line, bait and nibble

learning, laughing, investing in the simplicities of life.

We rest entwined in her inviting privacy and promise,

hooked on the allure of human warmth and nature’s bounty,

afloat on dawn’s delight.

You write with the ease of an artist, choosing his subject and paints, and with you linguistic talents, the imagery you paint with your words fills my mind with the scene that the magic of your words brings to life. I'm happy the fish lived to tell another fish story. You are a very talented poet and I'm glad you reviewed one of my poems or I would have been deprived of knowing your poetry. Thank you Taylor.

Idyllically sensual and awash with that early morning peace and relaxation, waking to the warmth of new day's love and light, this poem is so perfectly balanced and well-timed. It ooozes contentment and quietude in body, mind and spirit. Deeply refreshing and appreciative of nature, art and personal disposition. I don't know how I missed it before! And aaaaaaaaaaahhh... that heart-quickening tug on the pole... like deep calling unto deep. Another poem in this one, Taylor. Like Jude says, sumptuous, thank you. Kate xx

Taylor,
You can't imagine how happy I am to have found you. You truly are an artist. Your words, your descriptions; they are gloriously exquisite. You are also inspiring. I hope to someday achieve even a small portion of your talent.
Thank you,
Terry

Dear Taylor, this poem is amazing. Fishing has been one of my most favorite things in the world since I was a child. The way you have romanticized the experience through your images and seeing the beauty of the natural surroundings, coupled with the insight you express through the eyes of one who appreciates every detail of what she observes is just outstanding. It seems to me the persona had the pleasure of catching her first fish -an unforgettable thrill. Her observations and appreciation of every detail of the canoe trip, the catch, release and especially her admiration and understanding of her fishing partner's own appreciation of that morning, plays like a movie in my head. Your rythm and flow is dreamy and creates such a feeling of peace within the beauty of nature. Your word choice, as always, is impeccable and forms incredible mind pictures. From the silence of the paddle slicing the morning waters and the ripples of the canoe "lapping hungrily at the shore" to the excitement of feeling the tug of that fish in her hand and culminating in the last line in which they are "afloat on dawns delight" makes this a precious creation to me. This is one I will keep always and share with my fellow fishermen who will be astounded at what you have created here. Congratulations on achieving something I believe few writers ever could! I am in awe of your talent and creativity! The Ovid quote could not be more perfect for this masterpiece.
Your friend,
~Butch

Taylor, the average fisherman would bask in the reading of this wonderful poem. I smiled broadly as I read -- I'm a novice at fishing in fresh waters, though I can assure you I understand fully the allure of human warmth and nature's bounty. Exceptionally well written; your vocabulary always amazes me. Love`n smiles, Katherine

Taylor-made for your readers...a homemade spoon lure buffed with silver-write polish moving ripples of nature flushing oxygen-rich poetry over the gills...both fish and poem metamorphose into creatures of sleek beauty...too many people, too few fish...we hope we're learning enough to save them...before polluted waters, through ignorance, destroys them...Piscesean Spring has a hook, this piece would do well in Outdoor Life...
