Ode to the Horse

To the horse who floats accross the ground with grace,
Causing all bystanders to turn and look as he travels,
Or leap a brook or herd a cow,
With unasuming finess and pride.

And yes, to he who wins races by many lengths,
Ears forward, nostrils flared, enjoying the game,
And also to the one with just a nose in front,
Ears pinned, dirt covered, heart pounding but in front.

Hats off to the pony rotund and short,
Who shifts to keep it's young rider centered,
Being just naughty enough to teach good lessons,
But not to scare or discourage.

To all those who have endured what we humans,
Dish out through our ignorance and stubborn natures,
be it  ill fiting tack or  improper technique,
The benevolent horse carries on, teachers and mentors all.

One of your very best Equine Odes I reckon, Karen. Each stanza lives and breaths and is wonderfully framed by your last verse. Love the beautiful picture, too. I am blessed to have fields of wild heathland ponies grazing where I live at the moment. It's stunning when it gets to sundown and they all have their "funny five minutes" of wild galloping, bucking, rearing and general horsing around together. The sounds of their thundering feet is awesome. Such power, such grace! Truly poetry in motion. xx

God never created a more beautiful creature than the horse. I love your poem and the way your heart embraces your horses.

I have to agree, the horse seems such a noble creature, often ignobly treated by mankind, but patiently accepting its lot as servant of the two-legged masters. Chinese call it 'Ma' - and they paint the horse so well in their traditional ink and brush paintings. Look up the Irish film with Gabriel Byrne called 'Into the West', it's about poor young Dubliners called Apaches who ride their horses to the west of Ireland.

Whoa! You are on a ROLL tonight, Karen. Whatjado, take a I-gotta-write-poem-poems pill? It worked, I've enjoyed them all. This one touched where I live, because I have often thought of the misuse of horses over the years. Sometimes out of pure ignorance and sometimes out of pure meanness.
