GUILTY
The judge ruled aloud
Guilty of selling drugs
Using had a high price
Dealing was his answer

As they led him away, I noticed a small tear
Did he realize that his life was on hold?
Is he sorry for all the life’s his drugs destroyed?
Or was it an unfortunate consequence of an evil

“I love you daddy”, echoed through the court
A little fellow in a new suit wearing fear on his face
Watched tearfully as his dad went away
Would he learn right from wrong or follow dad’s path?

Tears dripped from his chin
I fought the urge to reach out to him
My excuse, I was worried about his rejection
In his eyes would I be viewed as an evil monster?

I immediately thought of my own daughters
I saw them crying as someone led me away
My insides ached with helplessness
Desperately I dismissed the thought

I wondered if that six year old heart
Would he ever trust a policeman again?
He didn’t understand that dad could do wrong
All he could do was ask why

A little gray haired lady stood beside him
She gently held his head to her heart
I watched her lead him from the courtroom
Into an uncaring world without dad

I hugged my kids so long that day
They didn’t understand why I was crying
I asked God to keep each of us safe
I never want them to see me being carried away

At times it is so very hard being a cop
Tho’ I can handle the danger and risk
My hardened heart turns to mush
When I see the little ones hurt so very much
Somehow I feel guilty and die inside

So many drug users say that they should be allowed to use drugs because they’re not hurting anyone.
In the end aren’t we all a victim.

Your poem is very moving. You did a good job in expressing yourself.

I'm glad your heart turns to "mush" where the little ones are concerned--however, you should never feel guilty, only grief for the innocent children when their parents choose to love the drugs more than their children. A wonderful write...

Very well written...it must be hard to be part of ,but drugs are illegal, and that is the law of the land...
