I remember years ago when the grandkids were so much younger. We use to have family breakfast every weekend. I loved it so much. Every Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving was a big meal and the gathering of all the grown kids and our grandkids. It was so wonderful.

Days Long Gone By

June 17, 2025

By Rose Marie Rideout

It doesn't seen so long ago,

When family gatherings were all we knew.

So many at our table to celebrate,

Before all the grandchildren grew.

No more weekend family breakfast,

No more special occassion  meals to have.

Just a few make time to come for them,

It makes those special times so sad.

I know that they have grown up,

And have made lives of their own.

We should accept those days are gone,

We're older now alone in our little home.

Maybe it is us who have to reach out,

To arrange a visit from them again.

Plan a special day of long gone by,

To rekindle what once was, can be the same.

Maybe moving wasn't  the right thing to do,

We live so much closer to just a few.

So far from the others we love,

I long for Days  gone by, again with the crew.

Impossible perhaps to rekindle what once was. Perhaps a tribute to you that the memories are preserved with such grace. Life goes on, things change, that's the way of the world. A lovely, sadly sweet poem.

With lives much more tied up and people living much further than the place of their birth, family get togethers become harder and harder arrange.

I know that it is strange, but they seem to forget that older people can no longer do all that is necessary to pull everyone together and the younger people have to do it.

The last time I saw my family was in 2012 when I drove over 4000 miles just to make sure I visited every one of them and we got together. None of them have come to see me except my twin brother once, since then.
