It amazes me who's first to pick up a stone and throw it....

Remember, Mom, when Dad passed away,
You were still in the parsonage on Mellowlight Lane.
The third day of grieving you received a call
From a church member who only wanted to know:
“When are you moving out?”
I was never aware of the misery you had
At the hand of a Christian who made her own bed
When cancer came calling and took her away.
Remember, Mom, when church ladies invited you
To go out with them for lunch?
The first biting question that one of them asked:
“Is that all you have to wear?”
If only I’d known what disgrace you concealed
I might have left home to be by your side
And invite these dear Christians to try once again
To come to their senses and leave well enough alone.

Hello George,

Sheer TRUTH. I can relate to this and have experienced a lot of these too, these are the "termites" that eat up what Christianity is all about. I hope and pray for your Mom, but God looks at the heart, not appearances.

Bitter Tongues indeed
When my mother was sick at home
then at the hospital, members of her congregation
were a no show, what a bunch of hypocrites.

Peace be with you

It is a very sad day when people do not practice what they so boldly preach. I believe in the practice, not the preaching.

Be safe,

The problem with faith is that we have to build elaborate structures to prevent the truth from coming out. Social cliques build easily on these structures filled with the willing.

Acid tongues fill churches every day.

George,

The bitter tongues of supposed perfection do rear their ugly heads.
I hope you had the opportunity to tell your mum you cared deeply.

Wonderful poem.

Thanks,
~D.

You know George. I feel this one. I love my Pastor and his fight to keep the church going, but ever time I go, some of the "Ladies" Make me feel like I am not welcome and they wonder why the church is in danger of closing down from a lack of support and very small congregations. I get more respect and feel more of the religious together right here on AD, than in my own church of ten years. Since I am one who will voice my extreme angst against these nosy busy bodies, I stay away when I shouldn't to my Pastors dismay. But he knows the problem and is held by the Elders from correcting it. Even the sanctuary of the house of God is not safe today from jealousy and nastiness. Loved your poem George and I am very sorry your mom would have to experience that. Happy Easter friend.
