When the best is last

Poem Artwork

Back In Time

sometimes I go back, back in time

a genteel era, those days were mine

with Sunday school and picnics too

faith and  friends who cared for you

When I was just a girl I believed

time and life would be good to me

I knew so little wanted so much

the real world? I was out of touch

learned some hard lessons in time

some I loved, their love wasn't mine

what had I done to create such strife?

not always what we do, it's just life

jade eyes I fell in love with as a girl

a universe contained in a tiny world

tears began early, love died so young

last drop of hope from my heart wrung

often I faltered, times I didn't pray

a drudge who gave up on a better day

suffering in silence, unknown unloved

but I never adjusted to how it was

in time, long time, midst the cold storm

the sun shone down and I was warm

now I have what I wanted life to be

but I left some behind I still long to see

I'm not young and foolish anymore

to the pain of the past I shut the door

I live in peace and in love I bask

God has saved the best for last

Enjoyed this, Susan. 'Back in Time' resonated with me. You could have been writing (in ways) about my life. A delightful pic too, looks like High School, or Junior High. I'm thankful that your life is filled now with love, happiness, and peace. Far too many never embrace these precious things. The very best to you and Jon. Thank you for sharing. Happy Holidays. Peace.... rlc

You are a master at rhyming poetry and I know that this poem is very close and dear to your heart.

After having the other saying, "It is better to have found love and lost it, they're not to have loved at all." I'm glad that you have a new one, "it is far better to have lost love and finally found True love, than anything else in the whole wide world."

I love your poem!

And I will not forget these lines;

"I'm not young and foolish anymore
to the pain of the past I shut the door"

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
