Heroic Couplets for an Anti Hero and his Hero (TOLT)

An exercise from Stephen Fry's The Ode Less Travelled. This is my attempt at heroic verse (iambic couplets of varying length) on the subject of a young man in police custody and stoned, trying to explain away half and ounce of cannabis found in his possession. Other poems inspired by the book will also be marked (TOLT)

HEROIC COUPLETS FOR AN ANTI HERO AND HIS HERO

Well yeah, well – bright in here.

Green walls – relaxing. Could do with a beer.

No, well, you see, that stuff –

Not mine. My God you’re buff!

It must have dropped into my pocket when

I fell while dancing – where’s the table gone?

Oh yes, it’s here; it’s what I’m leaning on.

I lost it for a mo.

Mmm yes, I understand the charge. I’m Joe

Selomotion. No, I didn’t make it up,
But I’ve lost my address – I know I drive a truck;

Though not right now, as you can see
Or else I could drive away, not have to be
Here, though it could be worse.
Gonna turn all this into a verse.
Not rap, poetry – you’re a handsome sort.
Will you be there when I’m up in court?
Your eyes, brown like a cup of tea just after the teabag comes out
Before you add the milk – and speckled like a trout.
That stuff – half an ounce, you say?
It’s personal use. That’s allowed, okay?
Not that it’s mine, no way.
Cannabis is bad
Go ask my mum. She’ll say I’m a nicely brought up lad.
Huh? What am I on?
What do you mean, my son?
I’m not stoned or even near
Takes more than an eighth of rubbish gear
To have any effect on me.
Not that I have – I don’t agree
With taking stuff to get me high
Is there any chance that I
Could get your private number?
Perhaps a private police box rhumba,
If you know what I mean.
I like a man in uniform. And green
For walls, relaxes me.
I need a sleep. This talking taxes me.
