This poem is for our Beloved dog Luger who just passed over.

Our Boy Dog Luger

Luger, our beautiful dog.
From losing you, we are still in a sad fog.
Wondering why it had to be
that you left this world so early.
You were the most beautiful dog I have ever seen.
The kind of dog that had been my dream.
You came to us so unexpectedly
from a friend as a gift to me.
You left our household the same way you see.
Just as you came- unexpectedly.
October 29, 2005 brought tears of sadness
to Bob’s and my eyes.
I expected to have you
more than seven and one half years by our sides.
But instead you got sick and suddenly died.
We miss you so. You were such a special pet.
Smart and sweet and like a child
that we will never forget.
You called me Mom and said I want out.
And yes, they were words without a doubt.
You said “hello” when Bob came in the door,
with love and affection that became stronger
more and more.
People might think that you couldn’t really say anything
but if they had heard you speak there would no hesitation
and know your words were the real thing.
They also wouldn’t believe that to please your Mom
and do the right thing.
You went down to the basement to use the cat’s litter trays,
so you wouldn’t go on the floor, when we were away or fast asleep.
That is a sight I would liked to have seen.
After you could no longer go up and down the steps,
you would wake me up wagging your tail and,
calling me “Mom” and saying “I want out.”
The words were so plain that Bob and I
could understand you without a doubt.
You couldn’t have had a better home. Our house was your home.
In the winter you were warm and in the summer you were cool.
You had plenty of food to eat, and all the bones you wanted to chew.
Your favorite thing to do was to swim in our pool.
You and Bob had such a bond that he is still mourning.
And he will be for a long time.
You left many memories of our happy days behind.
I hope you will send love and comfort to Ziggy, your son.
You two were joined at the hip as some would say.
He is missing you, and having a hard time without you
making it through the day. Hopefully with our love he will be okay.
I know you are still here communicating in spirit and with love,
and that you are watching down on us from heaven above.
Yes, I believe in pets going to heaven,
and it’s the same as where humans go.
We will all meet again someday,
and hug and love each other as we romp and laugh and play.
