Abandoned and chained to a tree
When you were but a little one

When told I could not adopt you

They said that you hated people

They placed us in a room alone
Still, you cowered in a corner
Softly I explained it to you
"Lighten up or you're a goner!"

I approached you very slowly
As they watched on through a window
Slowly you crept over to me
Then licked my hand as if to show....

Those looking on, we were OK
A bit frightened but doing fine
Yes, you went home with me that day
So very happy to be mine

I made you part of our family
You'd moan when we'd rub your belly
Don't ask me why, it just seemed to fit
And together we named you Kelly

You were always a bit timid
When strangers came nosing around
The hair on your back would stand right up
Then you'd give them a warning growl

But slowly you learned how to trust
You made everyone your friend
Such a loving dog you'd become
Right on up to the very end

Thirteen years with Kelly Belly
With golden fur bright as sunshine
You provided us with much love
