a poem from 2000 based on the psalm written because I was and am losing my faith in God.
Answer me oh Lord
my thoughts are troubling
The enemy's voice is his
He brings suffering and anger upon me
My heart is anguished
the terrors of death assail me
I am overwhelmed by terror
I am trembling with horror
I flew like the dove
into the desert far away
I had shelter
Far from the tempest
The enemy insulted me
I endured it
He raised himself against me
I hid from him
I've cried out in distress
You've ransoned me unharmed
The battle is against me
and then the wave comes
The enemy attacks his friends
he violates the covenant
his speech is smooth, his heart is war
His words are oil and they are drawn swords
but as for me,
I trust you

Beth, you have been so expressive in this poetry, and it strikes me not as pitiful or self-sympathy, but more stunningly descriptive: I deeply appreciate these lines: "his speech is smooth, his heart is war/His words are oil and they are drawn swords". So powerful. The whole piece is huge. ~~ Diana
