All in a Day’s Work
Have you ever sat in your workplace just plotting your escape?
As I write this piece, I feel like I am running out of space.
I know the walls aren’t physically moving. It’s just my mind again.
Because this isn’t right; I shouldn’t be here. The people are all insane.
There’s a lady talking on her cell phone like the office is empty or something.
And the guy across the way is sitting in his cube, doing absolutely nothing.
I’m looking right at him; he’s watching his monitor as if waiting for an email to appear.
I’m feeling him, though; I understand completely what it’s like to just be here.
I sit at my desk for hours on end. I generally don’t go out for lunch.
Because once I’m out there in the world doing stuff, coming back here would hurt me so much.
So I apply for jobs, find ways to amuse myself, and do crossword puzzles a lot.
Does that sound even remotely close to the responsibilities you’ve got?
I’m really intelligent. I have many skills, but the politics here are incredible.
“Bureaucratic red tape” is what some call it--you guessed it; the agency is federal.
The same old manure gets spread around when you feel it’s that time for promotion.
The one thing they cite is a budget deficit, so they won’t have to entertain that notion.
Does every office have a designated person who walks around spying for sport?
Looking in on people to see what they’re doing, and if there’s some abuse to report.
I have seen it all in my many years—selective hiring, discrimination, and plain old racism.
There are a few managers out there who do an excellent job, but most are afraid to even make a decision.
The government is full of figureheads, appointed because “integrity” must be maintained,
Certain people must be held to proper standards to preserve the federal food chain.
I have to admit I’ve known for some time that this isn’t the environment for me.
It hit me when I witnessed the back-stabbing clericals; everybody wants to be Head Secretary.
Go right on ahead with that foolishness. I have bigger fish to fry.
I need to finish this book and get it published, so I can kiss this nonsense goodbye.
