i hear them

trains

i don’t know why

i hear them, more often now, than i remembered

perhaps they were there all along freights,

running silently steady unnoticed

yet now today, even through the closed

windows and doors of the winter

there is sound

the distant whistle, calls in pulses

steady beats of arrival and passing

woot, woooooot

the rails vibrate

engaged reverberations echoing miles upon miles

rolling, rolling

i hear them at night, the afternoon, the mornings

curious, my ears have awakened to these distant sounds

so close and far away

So good to read you again, Debby, and I, too, am becoming more aware of sounds that hitherto have been my environmental 'white noise'. In fact, all my senses are far more awake then I think they have been before; perhaps it's an 'age-thing'?! :) I like how you conjure this awareness so effectively and yet simply. Has a haunting quality that is both calming and faintly disquieting. Nice! Do hope you're well. xx

the roaring thunder of life penetrates the many tunnels we burrow through, the closer we get to the station, the further we go ... it is our loco motive in our ears ...

Yes, if we live near the tracks, the sounds of freight's become part of our daily life.

I'm trying to find and can't remember a famous poet from the 60s whose poetry was often on the radio. I remember picking up one of his coffee table books and reading a very long poem that he wrote about, "I Remember Trains."

Trains have always been near me throughout my life since I was a child. You have awakened memories, Debby. Nicely done. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,
