I’d read one and then put it back-
the sentiments weren’t right
I’d read another, and another
and realized that my options
were dwindling
I read one more…
I was so moved by the tenderness and beauty of the words-
words that would make even the coldest heart sigh
and bow in prayer
They awakened my spirit and it blushed with
warmth
I felt the words and wished them to apply
but they didn’t
I began to feel melancholic about the feelings and
newness that used to be
Nothing was right
and I cried for it to be
I finally found a card but still longed for the
words and feelings from the other cards instead
of words that just are
I guess I wasn’t alone in how I felt because
I got the same exact card with
words that just are.
Oh the irony. I understand the feelings you express in this poem. I've had the same thoughts myself. I am a very sentimental person and will take hours choosing just the right card for those I love. The words have to be just right.

A bittersweet feel to this one Marilyn...Strange how getting the right card means so much, yet many times we settle for "words that just are". Why do we fear to tread, that's the question...Excellent poem!
