Eliot said it best in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock: "I have seen the Eternal Footman hold my coat and snicker, and in short, I was afraid."

Cigarettes and coffee

And remnants of nightmares in the dawn

Leave me contemplative

And chill me to the bone

As I glance through the morning paper

At the never-ending lines

Of memories and eulogies

To other people’s lives

And searching for immortality,

While finding it not at all,

I pour another cup of coffee

And watch the shadows fill the hall:

Ghosts of nameless strangers,

As well as lovers, hover there,

All forgotten—yet remembered—

Like nightmares

And coffee stains

And smoke rings in the air.

Carol,

As I sip my morning cup of coffee I still remember choking on a few of those smoke rings. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.
