Between the Lines

What I was a girl,


my mother warned me


—woman to woman—


“Always listen for the lies


between men’s sugared lines.”


 


Her words have served me well—


—until now—


Here in this sunlit morning’s room,


as I lie beside you and watch


your lips form the lines


          I know are mine alone to hear.

Carol. Nice poem. I think your indentations work well, and so does the use of --dashes. I like "sunlit morning's room", as if the morning owns the room. Cool. The poet's mother had words of wisdom, but a woman can tell the difference between Lines and lines, the latter being genuine.
