Maybe we are the chosen few-

One in a million and a dying breed

That someday will just fade away,

We are ones who offer up the words

That you close your eyes and long to hear,

As we whisper them in your dreams.

Words spoken softly by a poet’s heart-

Love, romance and desire, brightly burn,

Making you want to get ever closer

And feel the warmth of our poetic fire,

As we speak of passionate lessons learned,

Sharing with you the honesty of a poet’s soul.

When we are gone and are no more-

Where will you find the words that you long to hear-

When you wait in the silence and the words never come-

Who will feed your dreams and speak to your soul,

When the poets of the heart remain silent-

Who will speak to your heart?

Indeed, it brings a pain to think of our hours of straining to catch the perfect word to express the yearning of our souls; to cry out and never share the burden of our souls, for when we have left our earthly lives behind, what will become of our poems?

This is a beautiful poem. I think I will have to read "The Death of a Poet" before I leave.

A good question posed by your poem. Some folks need poets to interpret romance for them. These are generally lonely souls who have difficulty with romance and seek it through words such as yours.

But not to worry, when you are gone there will always be romantics who will write the words for the next generation to ponder. Great ones will come and go like the leaves of autumn. And some words, like yours, may be ensconced in history where they will be read over and over again many generations to come.

Such lulling, dreamy verse about the poet and his words. I will claim some of the resonance of this one, being a poet myself. When I am gone, the words will be left behind. More than that, we cannot do. I look forward to reading your work.
