How could you let the cold come in on us when you knew there were holes in the floor's foundation
you had the hammer
you had the nails
you had the new wood
How could you let the storm rip off our roof when you knew there rotten and worn out boards and beams and shingles
you had the hammer
you had the nails
you had the new wood
How could you let the snow pile up at our door when you knew there was only one way out
you had the coat
you had the gloves
you had the new shovel
How could you let the weeds grow so tall around us when you knew there were snakes slithering about
you had the sling blade
you had the diesel
you had the new tractor
How could you just stand by
and let us die
tell me why

Everything you needed the most was new like a new pair of shoes
no one had ever walked in them before
no one had ever tried them on
all tethered
all firm
unblemished
