The Fine Iroko
On that promising beautiful day
Standing strong like a huge Iroko tree
You took over the whole clan
Your fine demeanor, your sparkling regalia,
Your flute, your dance steps, your red cap,
Captured the atmosphere
Eyes were drawn to you and captivated as
You stopped virtually to say hello to every tribe
What a fine man! What is his name?
Where is he from? Is he a king?
What does he do? Is he married?
Does he have kids? Is family here?
These were questions on the lips of most.
Chiefs came in with their entourages
Masquerade displayed their magic
Drummers and dancers filled the air with music
Strangers to this sense of African spirit
took a journey in their minds to the homeland
Just then, like a huge thud
The mighty Iroko fell
The whole music stopped and the clan was thrown to confusion
Lying still in the eyes all we quivered.
Never getting a chance to say goodbye, we wonder!
Well respected and leaving a big vacuum
We cry asking too many questions?
Fine Iroko, we miss you!
Looking at pictures you left on our memories,
We remember and appreciate!
Fine Iroko, your jokes, your smile and laughs,
Your priceless folktales, your rich African proverbs,
We remember and appreciate!
Fine Iroko, we miss you and will not forget!
