on too rare days
I round a drab hallway corner
and see her

or perhaps

we take the stairs
both wisely forsaking
the office elevator

and our eyes meet

and she smiles

no doubt I am getting
the same smile
everyone gets

the same eye contact

but there is such warmth
in her smile
and such life
in her eyes

that my chest gets tight

she might be
twenty years wiser
than some of the other
terrific smilers

maybe even thirty

but she is

I think

quite possibly

the most beautiful woman
in that entire building
