The Organist
on watching Ed Ladouceur play his last postlude February 2007
his fingers --
ecstatic understated dervishes --
dance the way
sunlight sparkles on a lake:
ensconced for an instant in crystalline crests,
diamonds self-immolate in the flash
of their own brilliance.
in perfect synchronicity and symmetric grace,
a masterful flurry of passion and faith,
fingertips wed Cecelia’s keys,
shatter the timpani of God’s heart
into myriad scintillae of sound
piercing the reverberant air,
and battalions of angels rejoice.
a glissando of potentiality:
from subterranean rumbles
which earthquake the cathedral,
rattle bones to raise the dead
to enchanted pipers leading the way
up Jacob’s ladder:
Each rung vibrates an instant
then fades in the aftertouch.
So then quickly to the repeat!
Ascend, ascend!
Until toccata and ecstasy converge
and zephyrs of pure sound sweep you
into the heavens.
There, you hear the Unstruck Sound.
