Watching her mind fade away,
torments their heart night and day,
longing to help her with all their being,
yet struggling to cope with all they're seeing.
Trying to be there by her side
as her memory strays where it can't abide.
Loving her so with all their heart
dreading that time when they'll be apart.
Sitting so quietly in her chair,
looking at them with an empty stare.
Gently they touch her on her hand,
smiling so widely so she'll understand.
Softly they kiss her on her cheek,
ever so tenderly they speak,
wondering if she'll know them today,
hoping they won't hear 'go away.'
Luckily though sometimes she is fine,
they are the moments they'll keep for all time.
Holding her hand as they share any news,
one-sided chats with the aim to amuse.
Sometimes she laughs, sometimes she's gruff,
but time in her presence is never enough.
She is a lady who has always done right,
a loving kind mother (once joyful and bright),
the wife of a soldier, so loyal and sweet,
giving her best to all those she'd meet.
The sort who would help you
when tough times came by...
an honest good woman who always would 'try.'
Her family adore her, they hurt as she fades
they can't bear the heartache as dementia invades.
It's a road I once walked on,
so I know of their pain,
but know this, (her family),
that inside of her brain,
she drifts to the old times
where her children are there,
and to days of her youth
with no worry or care.
When memories of love and laughter abound,
and her darling loved ones, beside her surround.
The best times of youth she relives in her mind,
it's there her mind's gone to... and YOU'RE there to find.
So do not feel heartaches and do not feel pain,
for she keeps you in daydreams and it's there you'll remain.
I cried as I read this, because this sounds like my mom. It is sad, and very difficult, but your words put the feelings so well, and offer comfort, especially in the last stanzas.
Thanks for finding the words, that I struggle to find, sometimes.
