This poem is dedicated to a dear little possum and my son's affection toward it. Sadly though it passed away and so this is to honour it's life.

She was a 'mumma' possum who lived in

New South Wales,

her face was like a blossom

(as sweet as fairy tales.)

Her eyes were a soft brown-chocolate hue,

and her nose was a pretty pink shade,

she lived in the trees (as most

possums do)

and that's where she USUALLY stayed.

My son and his wife

(the love of his life)

bought a home quite

in sight of the trees,

'mumma possum slept there,

where she breathed in the air

of the gentle country breeze.

Their new town was called 'Medowie'

and with two boys they lived happily.

Now,my son's name it is 'Jared,'

and his wife's name it is 'Deb,'

and their eldest boy is 'Leo,'

with the youngest boy's name 'Jed.'

They did not know that they'd been

watched from up a leafy tree,

right under 'mumma possums nose

where she could clearly see.

Yes,she was 'playing possum'

(and had every right to be.)

Most possums are very shy,

and there's a darn good reason why,

This is THE fact that every creature

knows:

It's engraved in their mind ,

that humans CAN BE UNKIND!

And that's the message every

bush-brreeze blows.

So 'mumma possum' spied upon their house

week after week as quiet as a mouse.

Finally she came to see

my son was VERY kind,

and she wished that she could

speak to him...

and share advice she had in mind.

How could she tell him what to do?

How to say:

'Stay away from the big red 'roo!"

How to tell him 'the slithering

critters,'

(the ones that gave her the jitters),

'love the shade of his wheely-bin,'

or that 'funnel web spiders

like to swim!"

(even IN his swimming pool!")

Oh dear,oh dear, she could not speak,

no words to give, just a tiny 'SQUEEK!"

Would he give her the time of day,

when the words of humans she

could'nt say?

How could she tell him all the things

she wanted to,

when she didnt talk like humans,

and speech she could not do?

Finally she decided to lose her fear,

carefully she crept toward my son...

nearer and nearer until it was done!

Suddenly he saw her,

and with such great surprise,

found himself gazing into

her wide brown eyes.

His heart filled with wonder

right there and then,

and 'mumma possum'felt his heart,

and no fear she knew again.

He put his arms around her and her

little heart it melted...

he knew at once they had a bond,

and both of them they felt it!

He named her 'Mumma Possum'

and their friendship was so real,

he let her rest upon his arms

how wonderful that made her feel.

Nocturnal creatures of the night

sadly sometimes need to fight,

nature cruely can be bitter,

to a small and loving critter.

'Mumma possum'' went to heaven above,

and in Medowie is always remembered

wth love.

There is a tree in heaven with

the largest celestial blossum,

and in its center,dreaming peacefully,

rests the 'Mumma Possum.'

Kay I hung on every word. What a wonderful little creature and a precious poem in her honor.

Such a wonderful tribute for such a wonderful creature! I will have to look up your possum. My partner is afraid of our possums although they do not harm. She called them "rats" and stomps on the deck when she sees them at night. I wish I can change her fear, but she likes dinosaurs (birds) better.

Here's a video of a mother possum here carrying all of her kids.
