Unmasked

When memories of  traumatic blows sweep in

like  frigid breath of winters past,

Joys of summer days come lately fade

before the fearful blast of knowing,

Seeing, eyes unmasked, brain immersed

in sordid flow, unwilled, I cannot make them

go, these memories that have come to stay

and take my life and breath away.

Be still my soul—I’ll sit awhile and rest

beneath this old oak tree.

Deep breaths, take one, and two, and  three.

Now see, I’ve closed and locked the door.

Give me your hand, just speak my name

Tell me your love will be the same when, tempest

past, I dare reclaim that part of me that came unasked

upon the storm and stripped my leaves. My branches

bared what do you see?  Though tossed and torn I am

in truth, both who I was and who I am and who I’m

meant to be.

A fabulous poem in quite a classical style, as befits the mood and deep emotions that swirl throughout, driving towards that great summation. Time is an arrow connecting past, present and future that gives us shape and identity - an awareness of self. Damage can occur at any point along this projectory's line and awareness of it will recur without warning if it is undealt with at the time. Love this unmasking, Linda - and especially the safe place you have found in another to shift the heavy load. Gorgeous writing, thank you. xx

Well penned. I agree that we are all of that, past, present and future. God's view of us is even broader and stretches from the beginning of time to its closing. Excellent writing Linda. Bless you, in Him, J'nia

Greetings dear Linda. I am deeply moved by your sincerity and flowing sense of truth......I have read many of your poems and this one is your best yet in my humble opinion....We share a common bond....a kindred soul.....both survivors who lived to tell about God's grace and mercy.....to give hope to those who have none.....Beautiful work from your beautiful soul my friend.

Peace,
Bill :-)
