Overbearing voices of morality scold me for the errors I purposely make.
Everytime I inhale, exhale, repeat they melt away in my favorite mistake.
And once the voices are put to rest, I'm a better person, one who is fake.
My foolish escape, my selfish release, the only thing that keeps me awake.
And as the euphoria slips from my skin and my elation sinks to dismay,
I feel my former self return, "the real me", I beg my body to hide her away.
Each time I ignore her and each time she persists, my alias quickly fades.
She's an overbearing voice of morality and she's disrupting my masquerade.
First Kacie, let me congratulate you on graduating from high school on D-Day. Maybe it is fitting that your class should graduate on this day, when the Allied forces invaded France on June 6, 1944, and started moving the Nazis back toward Germany. Good luck on your chosen major in college, and not too many parties now, study is very important.
As for this poem, I know exactly where you are coming from. I have lived this masquerade for many decades, and when the "fake" me started to come out, I prayed something would happen to shove her back inside, so I could live the life I needed to live. It usually did. Thank you for sharing this honest part of your soul. You wrote this one very well, and very true.
