A reflective and soulful R&B take on Christmas, blending bittersweet memories, folklore imagery, and the enduring warmth of love and hope. Nostalgic yet empowering, it celebrates the magic of the season for children and the heart alike.

Christmas Past by Gloria Buono-Daly © 2025

[Verse 1]
I don’t say merry holiday
I say Merry Christmas
Snowmen watched as laughter fades
Bittersweet those yesterdays

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Though lights still glow, something’s cold
Kins have lost their hold
Christmas Past still warms my soul…

[Chorus 1]
Christmas isn’t just mine — echoes of Christmas Past
Faces once smiled now turn away
They call it joy, but I see other signs
No one’s always happy, why fake it Christmas time
Christmas isn’t just mine — but speaks my mind…

[Verse 2]
Friends may be near, still we drift apart
Chatter fades, still I play my part
Santa and reindeer dance on rooftops, in memory
Some fake a smile, some hearts break silently

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Through empty chairs, the memories play
Real peace is free, they can’t take that away
Christmas Past still lights my way…

[Chorus 2]
Christmas isn’t just mine — echoes of Christmas Past
Faces once smiled now turn away
They call it joy, but I see other signs
No one’s always happy, why fake it Christmas time
Christmas isn’t just mine — but speaks my mind…

[Bridge]
Christmas can feel cold, sinister at times
Voices shout, hearts strain, yet still we find rhymes
Rejoice if you can, let your spirit be free
Christmas Past reminds us, love still wants to be
Christmas wants everyone, even Grinch, don’t you see…

[Bridge]
Some people on Christmas —they gift hypocrisy
Some hearts on Christmas — they gift generosity
This is what Christmas is supposed to be
Hold your heart and set it free…

[Final Chorus]
Christmas isn’t just mine, yet I still hold it near
Different now, but crystal clear
No one’s always happy, why fake it Christmas time
But I can still feel peace inside
And that’s enough — Christmas isn’t just mine…
But speaks my mind…..

[Outro]
No no, ho-ho-ho Christmases maybe
Still glow-glow-glow for you and me
Snow-snow-snow-flakes fall each year
We all go-go-go Charlie Brown cheer
Christmas Past whispers softly here
Hearts sincere they stay
This can’t be taken away...

Rejoice if you can, let your spirit be free
Not everyone has Christmas, but Christmas has everyone…
Rejoice if you can, let your spirit soar
Not everyone has Christmas, but Christmas has everyone…

[fade out echo]

[fade out instrumental]

My Christmas present is so much different from my Christmas past. But like your poem I still rejoice in the holiday. Can remember the words of the first verse to all of the old carols.
