Sammy Jo
Sammy Jo is the matriarch
Of our little cat family,
She’s a tortie with spark
And lives with us quite happily.
She is the boss in our house,
And she knows just what she can do,
And though we sometimes may grouse
She knows that we love her too.
‘Little Miss Velvet Paws’
is her other name,
And she never pulls claws
When playing our games.
When she wants out the door
She will sit on the mat and wait,
Or pace ‘s the kitchen floor
Showing our slowness does irritate.
We are Butler, and housekeeper
So she won’t use the flap,
Why should she, we need her
We’re caught in her trap!
She speaks our language,
Knows how to say ‘OUT’
She has reached a good age
She’s sixteen there about.
When she hears the can opener
And the smell reaches her nose,
She’s in like a shot, its’ REAL tuna
At cat food, she turns up her toes!
When onions I chop
Sammy Jo is right there,
Meat goes with onions, maybe I’ll drop
A choice piece in answer, to that pleading stare.
Now for this feline lady,
A Grand Duchess in fur,
Life is all steak and gravy
And all she does is purr.
Now bad habits she’s taught
To the rest of our cats,
And life can get fraught
When they bring in dead rats!
They stretch out on the chairs
And sleep on our bed,
Our clothes are covered in more hair
Than most have on their heads.
When we come home at night
She’s sat at the front gate,
Complaining we gave her a fright
Because we stayed out so late.
Sammy Jo’s still a kitten,
In spite of her age,
She ‘talks’ and we listen
Every day’s a new page.
Down in the garden she loves to play,
Chasing string and pouncing on grass,
That’s why she’s unhappy when we go away,
We are her playmates as well as her staff!

The same thing could be said, and is, about my pooch Nipper. Very nice poem, lady.
