Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist, journalist, and lecturer who played a major role in the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957. Affectionately called the “First Lady of Little Rock,” Bates was a feminist before the term was made known. She was smart, attractive, and outspoken, and she refused to stand by and accept the stereotypical role women were assigned. Daisy Bates played a crucial role in the fight against racial segregation. She documented the battle to end segregation in Arkansas in her book, The Long Shadow of Little Rock.
