“Yeah,” said Shea. “Or maybe they’re all just making up for something.”
“Making up for — like what?”
Shea reached under his shirt, and from the small of his back, produced a slingshot. Nathan’s eyes went wide, and both boys smiled.
“Maybe being kids once themselves?” Shea said, stretching the bands a few times.
Nathan grinned and nodded as Shea fit an acorn into the leather cup.
“Definitely!” Nathan said.
A thin drift of white feathers floated down from the branches overhead. “Holy cow, I think you got that one!”
“Just its tail,” Shea said, handing the slingshot to Nathan. “So, let me get this right. You say there is a monster in the alley by your grocer?” Nathan slightly nodded while loading an acorn. “And it attacked you?”
Nathan pulled the bands tight and sighted between the forks. He wasn’t aiming for any wildlife. Last thing he needed was a volunteer finding a dead bird on the church grounds. But Shea didn’t seem to care.
