Humour at its best
All Jack Smithers wants is to get on with his job as Pastor of the Winmouth Community Church. However, he continually comes up against a string of characters that appear intent on hindering his mission in one way or another.
People like Sgt Johnson, the local bobby, who Jack initially winds up the wrong way and then spends the rest of his life paying for it.
Then of course, there is Horace Grayson, an 80 year old tearaway who lives in the local Wandsworth House for the Elderly, that Jack has pleasure in visiting on a regular basis. Nothing Jack ever says or does is good enough for Horace and he is continuously rude and threatening towards the pastor, even reverting to letting Jack’s tyre down on one occasion.
Further exploits arise from Jack’s involvement with Andy, an ex SAS veteran, (or so he claims.) He sets himself up as Jack’s guardian angel and insists on following Jack round wherever he goes. Jack is constantly embarrassed as Andy plies his trade, karate chopping imaginary people, threatening to put others who insult Jack, ‘face down in the lake,’ and throwing himself on the floor when a car back-fires, shouting, ‘get down, we’re under attack.’
Put this all together with Jack finding a church member’s dead cat under his bush, Nag the murdering Jack Russell who terrorises budgies and the continuous struggles with church government, it is a recipe for disaster.
Pastor at Large offers an amusing account of life as a Church Pastor and turns Jack Smithers into a type of James Herriot of the pastoral setting.
Written in a light hearted and hilarious style, it offers the reader an insight into the unknown, behind closed doors world of pastoral counselling and the pressures that are often entailed.
