PI Cam Locke is hired to look for a lovely African American girl and an older woman. Her searches lead to controversy and possible crime connected to a well-known local cosmetics company.
Private Detective Cameron Locke is among the people meeting a returning war hero, an African American Army Major, granddaughter of local Police Captain Tawson, Cam's police detective boyfriend's boss. A military pilot follows Cam home from the airport. After convincing her he is a potential client, he hires her to find the beautiful African American young woman he met the past year in Biloxi, Mississippi but lost contact with. Next morning Cam learns the twin sister of the returning Army hero has died and Captain Tawson hires Cam to find his ex-daughter-in-law, the mother of Major Tawson, who is, perhaps, in Mississippi.
Cam flies to Mississippi and on arrival receives a phone call from her boyfriend that Captain Tawson's son has also died. Cam does not find the pilot's girl with 'sparkly eyes', but does find the Captain's former daughter-in-law, who returns to Tennessee on learning of her ex-husband's death.
Cam meets a Biloxi police detective and a mutual attraction springs up between them. When Cam returns to Tennessee, she becomes involved in the intrigues and possible criminal activity occurring in the Tawson family cosmetics business. As a result Cam, Major Tawson and her mother are almost killed before tragic family secrets and those responsible for murder are revealed.

I'd noticed the gray Ford behind me as I left Airport Parkway for the county road. After making the several turns to reach my house the Ford was still tailing me.
Maybe it would have been wiser to turn toward town and the police station. I hadn't done that.
I scooted my butt down to the passenger side floorboard, raised my head just high enough at the outside edge of the seat back to see through the rear window. I pushed the door handle down just enough to release the catch. The Ford turned into my driveway, and I waited until it had moved far enough that the driver couldn't see both sides of my car. I opened the door just enough to slide to the ground, clutching my weapon two handed. I might make a fool of myself. But my heart as well as my head still hurt when I remembered someone I considered a friend had almost killed me right here.
