Excerpt Fifteen year old Billy Sharp stood on the dock, watching the mist float over the saltwater and listening to the groaning and creaking of the wooden vessels tied to the pier, when he began to wonder if anyone would show up to take him to Carter's Bluff. A rusty sign nailed to a wooden post read: Ferry to Carter's Bluff and Points North Leaves: 6:30 AM Sat. and Wed. Returns: 12:00 noon, Tues. and Fri. Before his feet lay a long, wide boat. Its deck was worn and scratched. Billy was fifteen minutes early. "Carter's Bluff, the vacation spot of a lifetime," he said. The boats around him rocked and rubbed against their moorings, straining and twisting the manila rope that secured them. Billy looked down between the planks and saw the gray water bobbing under him. Whale Pirates
This is a great book for teens and adults. I was fascinated with Billy Sharp, the fifteeen year-old main character, and his adventures off the North Atlantic Coast with his aunt and a sea captain named Arrow. The story is exciting, full of action and suspense. I found Billy to be realistic and his story to be very interesting. Billy learns a lot about life and what matters in this book, and I found his up close meeting with a whale while out in a small boat to be as riveting a passage as I've ever read. If you're looking for a short, fast-paced novel that has wonderful themes of truth, fairness, compassion and respect for nature then this is your type of book!
