Welcome back to this issue of The G - Spot!

Hope you’re all enjoying an excellent New Year so far and had a wonderful Holiday Season.

HIGHLIGHTS – CABLE, DVD’s, THEATRICAL RELEASES:

ARMORED: Newbie guard for an armored truck company, Ty (Columbus Short) is persuaded by his veteran coworkers to take part in a heist, whereby they will steal a truck with a payload of $42 Million. Convinced that the idea is foolproof and no one will get hurt, Ty goes along. But of course, the best laid plans don’t always pan out. If it wasn’t for the bank ready to foreclose on his house, he might have thought twice about agreeing. Good solid story, solid performances, and enough action and suspense to make this an entertaining afternoon at the movies. 3 out of 5 Stars

AVATAR: In the future Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is a paraplegic marine corporeal who is tapped to take part in the avatar program when his twin brother, a scientist, is killed. Jake’s twin had trained for years in the special program where humans use an “avatar” identity to fit in with the native culture of Pandora. Jake readily takes on the assignment much to the dismay of the head scientist, Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) who thinks that Jake is just a stupid jarhead and that the idea of the substitution is a big mistake. Jake quickly proves his worth to the program, however, when on his first trip to Pandora, he meets Neytiri, a Na’vi and one of the native inhabitants of Pandora. She saves his life from a pack of ferocious animals, much to her own chagrin.

Despite Neyteri’s ambivalence about him, Jake is soon on his way to being accepted by the Na’vi as one of their own when gung - ho Colonel Quaritch approaches him to in effect spy on the Na’vi and gain their trust, promising Jake he will get back the use of his legs if he succeeds. Jake agrees to be the mole. Of course, the more time he spends around the Na’vi, but especially Neytiri, the more he begins to believe that he will not be able to play the betrayer that Quaritch wants him to be in the end. The Na’vi are a simple people who cannot be bought with the promises of modern society. This makes it difficult to broker a deal with them to leave their land, their home, so that humans can mine for a precious material. When diplomacy doesn’t work, Quaritch decides it’s time to use brute force and exterminate the Na’vi over all of Jake’s and the scientific teams’ arguments.

The comparisons to DANCES WITH WOLVES are appropriate here in a story highlighted by political machinations and corporate greed versus a simple way of life and culture that is one with its surroundings and that respect every living thing. The performances here are excellent. Especially of note is Worthington’s multi - faced and layered Jake. Zoe Saldana is his match in every way and the supporting cast is all note - worthy. The battle scenes are explosive and larger - than - life. The special effects are absolutely FANTASTIC and well - worth the wait that it took for technology to catch up with Cameron’s vivid imagination. I absolutely loved this movie! James Cameron is a genius and I’m hoping that this is just the beginning of a new franchise. 5 out of 5 Stars.

DAYBREAKERS: In the future, 2019 to be exact, the majority of the population has succumbed to a plague and become vampires—some willingly, some not so willingly. This raises an important dilemma with the remaining human population, a minority at best, left to supply the growing vampire population as their primary food source. In this future, humans are hunted by the vampire military and farmed for their blood. Of course, by the time the movie opens, the situation has reached its tipping point and the vampires are forced to search for an alternate food source in synthetic blood. Unfortunately, the testing on vampire volunteers proves unsuccessful with explosive results. Hematologist Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) knows that the situation cannot go on any longer without serious consequences, even before the meeting with his superiors at the pharmaceutical company where he works. The blood shortage has produced a subculture of starving vamps that live underground and have begun to feed on the blood of other vampires. This has sped up the degenerative process where the vamps quickly age and exist in a mindless rage bent on only one thing: feeding. Edward is recruited by a small but surprisingly organized band of humans who want to find the cure to the plague that has taken over the human race. How they arrive at the cure is both entertaining and ingenious and made for some poignant and exciting moments in a bloody and fitting climax. A good story with decent acting and lots of action, blood and gore, this movie’s a must for vampire fans. 4 out of 5 Stars.

HURT LOCKER, THE: This slice - of - life war drama is set in Iraq during 2004 and follows members of an elite Army bomb squad unit, the EOD. Sergeant William James is the new guy, brought in after the loss of the team’s leader. His first time out he proves himself as a risk taker and a bit reckless. But James is just taking life as it comes and doing his job. He just does it a lot differently than his predecessor or new teammates in Sergeant Sanborn and Specialist Eldridge. Being in Iraq for this tour has made Sanborn nostalgic and hungry to start a family; he desperately wants a son. Eldridge is the junior member and is on edge knowing that every day could be his last, and letting it get to him every second of every day. This movie was excellent and the performances were great (Jeremy Renner as James and Anthony Mackey as Sanborn were definite standouts). The movie ended the only way it could have ended for duty - bound James even though you wished for so much more and different an outcome for him. 5 out of 5 Stars.

LOVE AND DANCING: Deaf since sixteen, Jake Mitchell is a world class dancer and West Coast Swing champ. Now a dance teacher who has given up competing, Jake meets teacher Jessica Donovan when he visits her school to do a lecture on how being handicap doesn’t have to hold one back from pursuing one’s dreams. Excited and inspired by Jake, Jessica lets him talk her into taking dance lessons with him. She starts off accepting the invite for her and her fiancée so that they can at least do a decent dance at their wedding reception. But of course, workaholic fiancée Kent is always on the phone and too busy making money to take time for the lessons which leaves Jessica and Jake all that time to spend alone together in the studio working on their moves and that instant, elusive chemistry. There are some really good dance sequences here, but not as many as I would have liked. The performances were serviceable as was the storyline. This was an enjoyable but typical romance, with some LOL moments, otherwise, nothing much else new here. 3 out of 5 Stars.

NINJA ASSASSIN: An orphaned taken from the streets, Raizo is taken in and raised to be a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan. But his master has made one grave error too many in trying to teach Raizo the tools of the trade. Raizo rebels and escapes the clan to go on a one - man mission of revenge and redemption. Raizo is played by one scrumptious and talented Asian actor named Rain. The fight scenes are suitably gory and spectacular and show Rain off to his most delectable effect. There is a nice interracial romantic element (BW/AM and on a smaller scale BW/WM) that I found refreshing as well as natural and organic. Overall, this was just an all around old school, fun, chop sockey popcorn movie. A word of warning, the blood and gore are not for everyone even though it seemed more fantasy violence to me than not, probably because of the mysticism surrounding the ninjas. 4 out of 5 Stars.

POWDER BLUE: Four Angelenos’ paths cross through chance, tragedy and divine intervention. The main characters are a mortician whose business is in jeopardy after the death of his father, a priest who is at an emotional crossroads after losing someone significant in his life, a stripper who is a single mother with a son in a coma and a convict who’s just served 25 years and is now free and trying to connect with his daughter. I got this but I can’t really rave about it. This was made up of so many moments that didn’t connect, and lost opportunities and beginnings with no endings or resolutions. The performances were nice (I was especially drawn to Brit Eddie Redmayne’s sweet and earnest mortician and Jessica Biel’s dedication to her preparation for the role of an exotic dancer is evident in her athletic and sensual stripping scenes). I also enjoyed some of the other character and story arcs, but none of these could save this disjointed drama from its delusions of grandeur. I think it was trying to be CRASH, but didn’t quite reach the cohesiveness or entertainment value of this movie. 3 out of 5.

PRINCESS AND THE FROG, THE: Tiana is a workaholic waitress with dreams of earning enough money to buy herself a space for a restaurant where she will put her homegrown culinary skills to good use. These dreams are dashed when the bank gets a better offer for the space that Tiana has bidded on. Meanwhile, purse strings cut by his parents, arrogant and nonchalant Prince Naveen visits New Orleans for some Big Easy fun. He is lured into the den of an evil voodoo magician and transformed into a frog. Tiana later kisses him with the promise that he can help her get her restaurant, her only dream, but instead, she herself is turned into a frog. The rest of the movie is a race against time for the unlikely opposites as they try to break the spell and realize that they were made for each other. Some enchanting and touching moments that had me in tears as only a Disney movie could. 5 out of 5 Stars

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN: Ex - con Jack Bruno has gone straight after his shady past to become a Las Vegas cab driver. Alex, a fare that he drops off at the UFO Space Expo just happens to be doing a scientific lecture at the convention. This contact will prove vital when Jack picks up two innocuous enough looking kids who just happen to have a wad of cash and want to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere in the desert. When his cab is pursued by non - descript SUV’s, Jack believes that his less - than - stellar past has caught up with him, not that anyone would be after his fares. But something much bigger than Jack’s past is going on here—something not entirely of this earth. Non - stop action, adventure and a minor romantic element highlight this Disney remake and round out a nice piece of wholesome entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. 4 out of 5 Stars.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD: Frank and April Wheeler are a young couple with the perfect life and a perfect house out in the suburbs of Connecticut. But underneath the veneer of perfection lies a serious and insidious malaise that is slowly dragging April into the abyss. In a desperate effort to save her marriage she suggests to Frank that they move to Paris where she will work as a secretary at a state job to support him while he finds himself and decides what he really wants to do with his life rather than wasting away at a job that doesn’t emotionally fulfill him. The acting in this was excellent and the story was very dramatic and relatable. Though I’ve never lived in the suburbs or been a wife desperate enough to try and abort my own child, I know all too well what it’s like to toil away at a job I’m miserable at just for a paycheck. 4 out 5 Stars.

TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, THE: The story picks up soon after Bella has recovered from being attacked by enemy vampires. She spends her birthday with the Cullens, but when her blood is accidentally shed at the shindig, Edward comes to realize that he and Bella are not a normal couple and can never be. So he leaves her, telling her that it’s for the best and the only way to keep her safe. Bella does not take it well. By chance, she discovers that when she does anything risky and puts her life in jeopardy, she can see and hear Edward. Naturally, she pushes the envelope for this contact. That is, when she’s not busy being romanced by childhood friend Jake. This one is even more angsty than the first movie, sometimes too much for my taste. I don’t remember being as melodramatic and dark as a teen (but then it’s been a while ). Nevertheless, the action and fight scenes between the wolves and the vampires more than makes up for the emo - fest. I especially love the wolf transformation scenes and let’s just say I am firmly in team Jake’s camp as of now. 4 out of 5 Stars.

WATCHMEN: In an alternative American reality, circa 1985, the threat of nuclear destruction abounds with the cold war in full effect between the US and USSR. Pretty much business as usual you might say, however, the landscape is significantly changed with the existence of masked superheores and self - appointed vigilantes for humanity. The government, however, has cracked down on these costumed vigilantes, effectively bringing their days of splendor to an end. A decade later, some have not taken to the imposed retirement too well. Some have lost their minds and been committed. Others have assimilated into normal society. But when one of their rank is brutally murdered it sets in motion an investigation that reveals a conspiracy of universal proportions, one where the fate of the world lies in the balance. First off, before its release, I had never heard of or been exposed to the WATCHMEN. Having said this, there were some rocky moments in the first hour where this movie almost lost me through its disjointed scenes and various flashbacks. I didn’t really get engaged until the movie revealed Dr. Manhattan/Jon Osterman’s backstory right after he exiled himself to Mars. After this, the movie really picked up and I was able to stick with it until the very end. The climax proved more than satisfying with a nice twist at the end that epitomized the conflict of man’s violent nature vs his wish for peace and the ultimate meaning of sacrifice. The acting in this proved spot - on, highlighting the generally flawed and dark natures of the superheroes (and some were a lot more dark and flawed than others, can you say The Comedian?). The special effects were suitably imaginative and graphic. Speaking of graphic, I had to keep reminding myself that this was a movie based on a GRAPHIC comic so that the gritty incidents of gore and urban violence didn’t jolt me. Still the explicit sex scenes and male full frontal nudity did. Overall, it was kind of like a multi - car pile - up on the highway, frightening and scary but strangely compelling. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. 4 out of 5 Stars

Tally stood leaning against the door.

“Are you following me, Detective Cavaleri?”

She strolled behind me as I washed my hands and fell right into her character from the elevator. I had yet to figure out what character it was, only that I liked her performance.

“Do you have a problem if I am?”

Apparently, I didn’t answer quickly enough, felt her hands slide up into my neatly cut hair, jerking my head back despite the one - foot disparity between my six - two and her five - two.

Liking her roughness, I closed my eyes and reveled in the pain, wanting it and knowing I deserved it.

“Shall I make things easy for you and assume you have no problem?”

It was a rhetorical question. I knew it and she knew it. She wasn’t asking for my permission; I had given my tacit consent the minute she walked into the men’s room and I didn’t object.
