There are times, when I try to make somebody laugh...and, there are times when it just happens because of circumstances. This is one of those occasions.
"No great thing is created suddenly." Epictus
I do most of my walking/jogging at a local park, and I was just finishing up one sunny afternoon, and I was walking back to the car. On the way back, I noticed a man in a wheelchair heading in my direction. I arrived at the back of the car, to put my things in the trunk, and I noticed the man in the wheelchair arrive there about the same time.
I was putting my things in the trunk, and when the man got there, we exchanged pleasentries and the man stopped to chat for a while. We talked for a few minutes, and then I noticed a big grin on his face. Did I say something funny, to get such a smile? I had no idea what he was smiling about, but I noticed he was looking at my license plate. The man pointed at my license plate and said, "Your personalized license plate is funny! How did you come up with the idea for it?"
My personalized license plate reads: SLOWPOK.
"Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts and never hope more than you work." Rita Mae Brown
So, I explained to the man how the idea came about. The speed limit is still 55 miles per hour in many places, and being the good and model citizen that I am (yeah, right), I never driver over the speed limit! But, there are the ever-present road-hogs, who never obey the law, and they drive 60...70...and 80 miles an hour and think nothing of it, and they have no consideration for others!
Anyway, as I explained to the man...other rude and inconsiderate drivers would come up behind me and start on their horns...wanting me to speed up or get out of the way! They would pass me, and throw a finger my way, and/or yell obsenities at me for driving so slow. You know the type...people who have no respect for others!
So, I told the man...that I already had a personalized license plate on my car, but I didn't like it, and I wanted a change...but a change to what? Personalized license plates can be tough to create because there is a limit of seven or less letters or numbers that can go on it. To do this, it was going to take a little creativity, imagination, and a little thinking as well. That's something I don't do well...THINK!
I told the man, I was driving along the freeway one day, and there was a fellow driving a truck behind me, and he came right on top of my rear bumper! I thought he was going to hit me, and of course, I was upset about it! I kept watching him in my rear-view mirror, and I could see the hate in his eyes, because I was going so slow...I could see his impatience! But, because I'm a model citizen, and never break the law (yawn here), I looked in the rear-view...shook a fist at him and said, "Okay, bucko...so I'm a slowpok...why don't you just go around me!
After I screamed that to the other driver...I thought to myself..."That's it...SLOWPOK...that's what I want on my personalized license plate!" As the truck raced around me...and thanked the (jerk) for the idea!
And, I told the man in the wheelchair that's how the idea came about for the license plate. I've had the license plate for about seven years, and I've had a lot of fun with it. Many times, I can see people in the rear-view mirror in the car behind...pointing and and lauhing at the license plate, and it's great fun!
I've always loved the creativity and ingenuity that goes into a personalized license plate, and a few of my favorites are; LEMON; GOMPA; DOINOK; HOTDOG; FLOSS; PAIDFOR, HIS, HERS, ETC
"Creativity is a drug I can't do without." Cecil B. DeMille
The man in the wheelchair was quite disabled, and his right arm seemed to be useless. There are some people on this Earth, that have been dealt a terrible hand, and this man was one of them. But, the disability didn't take away his smile...and he seemed to be enjoying himself with our short visit!
As we parted our ways, I wished him well, as he struggled with the wheelchair across the parking lot. I was just glad I had the opportunity to put a smile on his face that afternoon. He certainly made my day...and I hope I made his, too!
