Here's the $64,000 question. What is the difference, in effort, or in time, does it take to tell a clean joke...as opposed to telling a dirty joke? Answer: There is none...as far as I'm concerned!
I've been in the humor business for over 50 years, and I can say that a person doesn't have to be dirty to be funny! Jokesters who resort to telling dirty jokes and gross humor...may think they're funny, but they're not! They only hurt themselves! People who use dirty humor...tarnish and ruin their reputation immediately...that's if they care about their image and reputation! Some people don't care about their reputation!
Any person, who goes so low, as to tell you a dirty joke, or uses racial slurs of any kind, doesn't respect you, in my view. So, why would you want a person like this around you? A delicate situation arises, when there is the use of dirty humor in the workplace, etc. This can get tricky. The dirty humor might be coming from the work director; the lead; the manager or even the boss of the company! These people have authority, but regardless...stand your ground...you don't have to take this abuse for any reason, from what I call the "little minds of the world." What to do?
I'll share with the reader a few things you can do, if a jokster enters your life, and you're having trouble trying to deal with it.
!) Tell the jokster, "I don't appreciate your humor (or lack of it)," and walk away! If the jokster is a fellow-employee...and comes around again, try to ignore him!
2) If a person tells you a dirty joke, or uses dirty humor to get a laugh...don't ever smile or laugh! This is what the jokester wants...to make you laugh, so don't do it! The jokester may never return because he didn't get the laugh he was expecting in the first place!
3) Remember when your mother used to give you a cold, hard, steely look when you did something wrong and said nothing? Do the same thing to the jokester! It is said, that a picture is worth a 1,000 words...and giving the jokster a piercing look, without saying anything...it's a look of saying, "I expect and demand that you to respect me, buster!"
4) If the jokester has told you clean jokes in the past....but now he's told you a dirty joke or story...quickly bust it up! Look at your watch...and how time has gotten away...and you have an appointment, etc. Quickly go into your hurry-up mode..."I'm going to be late for my meeting!" By doing this, you have busted up the timing and delivery of the joke...and you hope to leave the jokester with his mouth open...tell him...See Ya!
All of us, have to tolerate...and I mean tolerate people of bad behavior...and inconsiderate people for many reasons, in and out of the work place, etc. And, it's not easy, especially if the brainless, inconsiderate person is a family member or a co-worker, etc. But, be decisive...take a stand...get the respect you deserve...put the jokester in his place, and you'll feel better about yourself for doing so!
