From epa.gov; (Love Canal); Quite simply, Love Canal, is one of the most appalling enviornment tragedies in American history! In the 1920's, the seeds of a genuine nightmare were planted. It is a cruel irony that Love Canal was originally meant to be a dream community. That vision belonged to a man for whom the three-block tract of land on the eastern edge of Niagara Falls, New York...was named William T. Love.
On the first day of August, 1978...the lead story of a front page story in the N.Y. Times read; Niagara Falls, New York: 'Twenty-five years after the Hooker Chemical Company stopped using the Love Canal as a chemical dump...82 different compounds...11 of them have been percolating upward through the soil...their drum containers rotting and leaching their contents into the backyards and basements of 100 homes and a public school built on the banks of the canal.'
TruGreen ChemLawn has been accused of illegal chemical dumping in various form since the early 1990's. While the company has never been caught, former employees and other citizens in the areas where this company operates insist this is occuring.

The following article is important to me, because I live only a mile from where this jet spill is taking place as I write this article. It was written by John Fleck of the Albuquerque Journal recently on June 16, 2010. The headline reads:
"Base Plan Cleans Up Jet Fuel"
Sub title reads;
"Kirtland proposes 24 pumps to deal with tainted groundwater"
"The Air Force on Friday (June 18, 2010), submitted plans for some two dozen pumps to suck jet fuel out of the ground beneath Kirtland Fir Force Base and surrounding neighborhoods as an interim step while long-term cleanup plans for the massive underground contamination are developed.
My two cents (opinion); This fight between the state of New Mexico and the federal government (Air Force) has been going on for TEN years...and some estimate the cost at over 100 million dollars...and enough is enough...
"In its formal response to questions raised by the New Mexico Environment Department, the Air Force also asked to reduce the number of monitoring wells demanded by state regulators to better track the extent and nature of the contamination from the jet fuel spill at Kirtland.
Air Force officials argued that the 18 new wells it proposed...some placed at different sites than the state wanted...would be sufficient to characterize the jet fuel in soil beneath the base's old jet fuel loading area. The state had listed 30 monitoring sites.
State officials praised the Fir Force's recent stepped-up emphasis on dealing with the jet ful spill. But, shey said they had not begun to evaluate the request for fewer wells and other issues in the 1,218 pages of monitoring and cleanus plan documents handed over Friday morning.
My Two Cents (opinion): The Air Force shouldn't be praised for anything...all this has been going on for over TEN YEARS...and it's about time, they came out of their coma and did something they created! They're all a bunch of liars! When I fought the VA for over four years...all the liars came out of the woodwork...same thing here...
"Tom Berardinelli, Kirtland's top civilian, said the plan's goal is 'complete characterization as rapidly as possible' of the nature and extent of contamination, so cleanup can be quickly put into place."
My two-cents (opinion); What has the Air Force been doing for the last ten years? This is a classic case of liars battling liars in the government!
"To that end, the Air Force has beefed up funding this year for the work, in May committing an additional $15 million. Controversy over the Air Force's handling of the fuel leak, first discovered in 1999, burst into public view in April when the Enviroment Department sent Kirtland a letter sharply critical of its handling of the problem, which could threaten Albuquerque metro area water supply well."
My two-cents (opinion); You mean sweeping it all under the carpet by the Air Force, don't you? That's all you ever get out of the federal government...lies!
"The letter complained that more thanb 10 years after the leak was found, the Air Force had not determined how wide-spread the contamination was. In a recent meeting with the Journal's editorial board, Col Robert Maness, who took over command at Kirtland in April, acknowledged that 'agression' had been lacking in the Air Force's previous handling of the spill, and pledged to push forward to deal with the issue.
He also said he was not criticizing Kirtland's earlier handling of the situation, pointing out that Kirtland first was trying to determine the possible extent of the contamination."
My two-cents: (opinion) Does it take ten years to do that? Sounds like a cover-up to me!
"Air Force officials first noticed the leak, at the base's bulk jet fued loading facillity, in 1999; they believe the fuel had been slowly soaking into the ground for decades."
My two-cents (opinion); Seems to me that the worst thing the Air Force did, was to get caught!
"The area where the leak happened is just south of Bullhead Park on Albuquerque's south side. Initial steps to stop whe leak were successful. However, early tests at the site showed no contamination of groundwater.
My two-cents: (opinion) As I said earlier, I live about one mile from this site.
"It was not until 2007...and after testing farther away from the site...that the Air Force realized some of the jet fuel had reached Albuquerque groundwater and was moving toward two municipal water well fields.
No contamination has been detected in any drinking water wells, and officials say the threat is not imminent. But if the flow is not stopped, they say, two important wells serving Albuquerque's south side could eventually have to be shut down.
'Those are two of the most productive wells the city has, the best water the city has,' said Maggie Hart Stebbing, a Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority Board member. Stebbins said the Air Force has been 'more forthcoming' in recent months in addressing the water utility's concerns about the risk to Albuquerque's water supply."
My two-cents (opinion); 'Forthcoming?' How about sweeping it all under the carpet?
"Experts say it will take time for the jet fuel to reach any water wells, though no one is sure how much. 'It's serious, and we've got to do something about it,' says Bruce Thompson, head of the University of New Mexico Water Resources Program, 'but it's not an imminent threat.'
There is uncertainty about the size of the spill. Air Force estimates have ranged from one million to 3 million gallons, which they say is an estimate solely of the fuel that has soaked down through the ground and is now floating on top of the water table. The New Mexico Environment Department includes an estimate of fuel still in soil layers between the surface and the water table, and estimates the spill at nearly 8 million gallons."
My two-cents (opinion); I just don't know which liars to believe...the state liars...or the liars in the federal government a.k.a Air Force!
"Bernadinelli, in a telephone interview, acknowledged that the higher Environment Department estimate could be correct, but that the most important thing is not the number, but rather efforts to clean it up."
My two-cents (opinion); Why has the Air Force and the federal government been stone-walling for over ten years? They're going to kill us all...
'What we're concerned about,' he said, is how do we get it out quickly.' The Air Force will submit additional groundwater monitoring plans to the state in July, with long-term cleanup plans to come later."
My two-cents (opinion); Which July...and how many years later are you talking about? Which liars do I believe...the liars in the state...or the liars in the federal government a.k.a Air Force?
END OF ARTICLE;
It's scary enough to try to deal with the liars in the federal government and state government when it comes to chemical spills, but when it comes to spills and contamination overseas...that's a different story! Case in point...
From: Armchair Generlist.com: Swedish public television SUT reported that between 1991 and 1994, Russia dumped chemical weapons and radio active waste of the shores of the Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea.
From: Times of India.com; India starts probe into Chinese dumping of chemicals. India has indicated a probe into the alleged dumping of chemicals used in household cleaning products by China after finding 'evidence' of injury to the domestic industry.
As I said earlier...we live in a country of choices...you can either be an apathetic couch potato...or you can raise hell...the choice is yours!
