At the age of 65 in 2011, I'm all grown up now, and I somehow survived the rebellion of the 1960's, which I think was the most decade in my lifetime, not only in my personal life...but for people all around the world.
Cuban Missle Crisis: In 1963, I was a senior in high school, and the Caban Missle Crisis has to be the time I was the most frightened in my life, as I thought it would be the beginning of World War III, and nuclear weapons would be used and annihilate all the peoples of the world! During the Cold War, there were some pretty sick people in all this, building weapons of mass destruction...fighting over what? Democracy vs. Communism?
"America is addicted to the wars of distraction." Barbara Ehreneich
Assasinations: Over my lifetime, I have witnessed three assasinations of high public figures; President Kennedy when I was a freshman in college; Robert Kennedy; and Martin Luther King, Jr. There have also been several attempted assasinations in the past of high government figures.
Watergate: For the first time in my life, I got the opportunity to see for myself how democracy works in this country, as I saw on television almost all the Watergate hearings in Washington, D.C. All the hearings led to a corrupt government, whereby people in high places in the federal government went to prison, including the Attorney General and a sitting President of the United States (Richard Nixico) was threatened by impeachment and resigned. Corruption at its worst at the highest levels of government in the United States!
Prision Riot in New Mexico (1980); How many ways can one human being kill another human being? I think we all found the answer to this question in this prison riot, which killed 33 prisoners and injured over 100 others! Inmates were be-headed; killed with blow-torches; maimed; castrated; you name it...man's inhumanity to man at its worst! This is the most sick display of a human being I have ever seen! This awful event is more personal to me, because, at the young age of 12, I visited this prision, which is in Santa Fe, just an hour from Albuquerque, where I currently live. At that time, I saw the insides of the prison myself...awful; damp; dark; long shadows...an awful smell to it, etc.
Oklahoma City Bombing: Children are taught to hate, and this disgracful event is a person or persons who hate something so much, that they are willing to do something like this and pay with their lives! What's interesting here, is the gun issue that has been a controversial issue over the years in this country. I am not a gun owner or an advocate of guns. But, take a look at these figures of the time.
Over 70 people were murdered during a 20 year period...and none of them were killed with a gun! Two O.J. Simpson murders with a knife; two grandparents were killed with a knife by their grandson in a little town just north of where I live; and the Unabomber killed 5 people with a device that was mailed to the people killed. Add the 67 that were killed in the Oklahoma City explosion, and you have over 70 killed...and none of them with a gun! So, if somebody wants to kill another...they don't need a gun to do it!
"If it's far away...it's news. If it's close to home...it's sociology." James Reston
9/11: A certain people on one side of the Earth...go over to the other side of the Earth...and murder about 3,000 people! These are sick individuals...who put more importance in their cause...than in human life itself. I was home from work that awful day, and when I saw the first plane hit the first tower, I thought it was a scene from Hollywood. But, when I saw the second airplace hit the second building...and the live reporters come on television...I knew something awful had happened! Soon after, all the airplanes in the United States were grounded, and I knew something awful had happened...had we been attacked from the outside the United States? This political killing of about 3,000 people is so bad, that I am almost ashamed to call myself a human being!
Random killings: There are too many to list here, but this includes the Virginia Tech murders; the Arizona killings; the Fort Hood killings and on and on...which are sad day for all Americans and decent people around the world.
Child (sexual) abuse: I think those who abuse or sexually abuse a child should have a special place in hell. One of my brothers was sexually abused by a priest when he was only 12 years old, and his life has been in ruin ever since. Now 53 years old, he has been an alcoholic all his life, and he has lived on the streets for over 30 years!
Disrespect/serious attitude problem: I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico...home of the world-famous 'Pit' the basketball arena at the University of New Mexico. The basketball arena was built in 1966, and is called the 'pit' because all the 16,000 seats were carved out of a hole in the ground, and all the seats are underground.
At half-time. of the game between the University of New Mexico and Colorado State, some jerk pulled the fire alarm system...and all 16,000 fans had to evacuate the building! Can you imagine over 16,000 people waiting in the parking lot in the middle of winter (Jan 11, 2011) until the green-light is given to come back into the arena? This is another example of disrespect in this country! The police and the Fire Marshall's office is still looking for this jerk...
Many kids learn bad behavior from their parents and other adults: Let's face it...there are millions of rotten parents of bad behavior all over the country, who should have never had kids in the first place. At the age of 65 (2011) and after 48 years of driving, I decided to sell the car and walk around the neighborhood and ride the bus to satisfy my needs.
One day, I was riding the bus, and I was sitting across the way from the back door of the bus. The bus was crowded on this day, and I had to sit next to a little girl about 2-3 years old, and a woman on the other side of the little girl, who I presumed to be her mother. Somebody rang the buzzer to get off the bus, and when the bus stopped, about 2-3 people got off the bus using the back door. After the people got off the bus, the woman sitting on the other side of the little girl threw a can, of what I presumed to be about half a can of soda) out the back door! The can bounced around the sidewalk...spilling and splashing soda all over the sidewalk! I was so mad when I saw this happen, that I felt like telling the woman something...but, in today's disturbed world, I decided to stay quiet! Somebody has to pick up this can and clean up the mess! Another example of how children learn bad behavior from adults, whether their are the parents or not.
Enviornmental groups: In 2010, I joined two national environmental groups, and I was not surprised when I got the newsletters, that were filled with stories about corrupt companies and government, etc., that pollute the air we breath and the water we drink. People who do this are selfish and self-serving...or look the other way...or both for self-gain! They are only interested in the bottom line...in the form of higher ratings for a radio or television show; materialism; or money, of course, which is the root of all evil. So, the environmental problems and issues are just a part of the over-all issues affecting the country...and there are many!
"We are making the future...and did any of us trouble to think of what future we are making...and here it is." H.G. Wells
So, what's the main problems in the United States? The United States has a BIG FAT ATTITUDE problem! It's not just about politics and the use or mis-use of guns...it's a socialogical problem! Domestic violence; child/senior abuse; road rage; loss of respect for others; put-down of others; selfish; greedy; being deceitful; apathy; fraud; the manner-less; mud-slinging in politics; gossip; racism; bigotry; hate; liars; thieves; whew...you call this a bountiful/affluent society?
All of this adds up to a bankrupt society...and sadly...that's where the United States is headed...lack of ethics; morals; values...
