Shaping Reality through ‘Magic’
[thoughts from ~burning woman~ by Sha’Tara]
In its broadest sense, magic is ‘the art of making things happen’. Magic can be seen as a metaphor describing the dynamic relationship between human consciousness or will and everything that lies beyond this: events, circumstances, objects, other people. It implies some element of control over reality as perceived.
The psychological and moral orientation with which one embarks on the process of shaping or transmuting reality determines whether the magic one employs is, according to medieval and Renaissance definitions, ‘white’ or ‘black’, clean or unclean, sacred or profane. Thus, humanity falls under three categories: the sacred practitioners or ‘magicians’, the profane, and the rest as victims.
The magician/manipulator assumes an active role in the world he inhabits and transforms it accordingly. The victim by contrast remains passive, a powerless slave to circumstances. Regrettably most human beings throughout most of their lives are victims. They do not shape, still less create, their realities but accept these second-hand, becoming and remaining slaves to their realities. (Paraphrased from “The Elixir and the Stone” by Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh.)
Who are the “magicians” in today’s world? Obviously, the leaders in our three so-well known power states of organized religion, banking/business and politics/government. They shape the world we live in by taking control of natural resources and labour and shamelessly exploiting these to their own greedy ends. Very well, they deserve their riches since the rest of their victims are unwilling to stand up to them and only too willing to serve them, even to encourage them by voting or observing them through the Media. I don’t know if everyone at some fortuitous time experiences a surge of awakening, a shaking up of reality, a powerful vision or dream from which personal power can be assembled and used so as to move from being a passive victim of the Matrix assembling technological toys in sweatshops, to being a “magician” or reality-changer. I suspect that everyone does but few understand its meaning, or how to grasp the genie long enough to subsequently use it to re-shape their lives.
I experienced many of these in my life but the most extreme and powerful happened over three decades ago. At the time a, shall I say, friend of mine was a born again Christian with great zeal to make converts for his religion. Naturally he saw my experience as an intervention from God in my life and proceeded to guide me into the “born again” aspects of his religion based on the Bible. Having nothing else to go by, I went along, finally choosing a church and getting baptized in this new religion. All seemed right at first, lots of holy talk and lots of opportunities to share ideas with new acquaintances. It took me about three years to realize I’d been hoodwinked into what is basically a cult, though an accepted one, fully “guaranteed” by the Matrix. One could rise in this place, get a reputation and position by preaching and talking holy – just as long as one did not try to manipulate the consensus reality or status quo, even if that status quo happened to be diametrically opposed to everything that the Jesus of the New Testament taught.
I wasn’t rubbing shoulders with disciples of a martyred deity, but with massively bored fans of the planet’s most popular super hero. Not being a complete idiot, I was bound to discover the massive fraud being perpetrated. By the time I left that institution I understood that ‘vision experience’ had been a personal gift and not divinely-inspired at all. I had taken myself to ‘see’ inside a hidden aspect of reality and having shaken the religious Matrix trappings from my mind, realized I had brought back something beautiful that I could work with - alone.
Much introspection and much study came in the years that followed. As I interacted with entities (Teachers) from another dimension I ‘saw’ the sacred and the profane in the handling of personal power. The profane was easy – the world is awash in profane magical power, more so than ever thanks to informational and mechanical technology – and that in itself was a warning. The sacred demanded self-sacrifice, something the world basically abhors, and that was its attraction to me, for anything the world, the Matrix, rejects, by observation has to be the way I would choose to go.
The Teachers patiently explained to me the concept of shaping reality within the realm of the sacred. The power they exuded and the tests they put me through showed me the face of the sacred. Anything, anyone, that serves the Matrix could not possibly understand this. In the Christian religion I heard much on “the way of the cross” and was given much to study in that area, but it was all talk. These Teachers took what I already knew pertaining to this “way of the cross” and made me experience the reality of it, piecemeal, of course. Sacred magic lies in servanthood. In compassion. In seeking to understand even when that which is being confronted shocks and repulses one’s sensibilities. Love your enemy lies right in the center of that path, and you can’t get around it if you hope to remain on the path.
I discovered that ‘magic’ isn’t making things appear or disappear, flying or walking on water or indulging in petty miracles. Sacred magic lies in changing yourself as you give of yourself to strangers, or to people who simply need help and can’t get it from Matrix sources. That life-changing magic depends heavily on making a habit of forgetting what you did for another, and forgiving wrongs and debts as easily as if they had never existed in the first place. I learned the hard way that there is a way to use anger and even hate without getting lost in the emotions engendered by such involvement.
And I learned, though it consisted of a great shock to my system(!) that nothing is intrinsically wrong, or evil, of itself. How I perceive such thing, or act, is what gives it the reality of being evil, good, or neutral. I can look, I can judge, I can personally reject, but I cannot condemn because I cannot ‘see’ the connection of the microcosm to the macrocosm. Something ‘evil’ in my microcosm may well be something that upholds some great truth in the macrocosm of the universe or even beyond.
Man’s great error is to assume he can know absolutely what is good and what is evil. His other great error is to assume that he can choose arbitrarily to do one or the other depending on what he believes, or what he feels like doing in the moment. Sacred ‘magic’ guides the magician or avatar through a world where, literally, angels fear to tread. By contemplation based on action, his ‘magic’ moves him to be at the right place at the right time to do that which needs to be done. Then the would-be avatar takes a deep breath and goes to work. That puts a sure end to the ever-present temptation to condemn!
