He was a real man

My father was a simple man. He never complicated life by esoteric questions. He believed in hard, honest work, love for his family, compassion for his fellow man. In all the thirty years that I knew my father I never heard him downgrade a single person. I only remember hearing him raise his voice a few times and I never heard him say anything disrespectful to my mother. If someone in our community needed help he would be among the first to extend a hand. There was an old man that had no family left. He was alone in the world and not strong or well anymore. My father fixed up a two room shed on our property. He made it comfortable with a sitting/bedroom and a small kitchen. The old man gratefully moved his meager possessions in. He lived there several years, his health declining as time went on. My father took food to him everyday. He checked on him twice a day. One day he found him in bed unable to get up or to speak. My father held that old man in his arms, just like he would have his own father. That old man died in my father's arms and my father paid for his funeral. That was the kind of man who raised me and taught me about love. My mother was a constant church goer with a quick tongue and an evil temper. She took me to church where I was taught about God but Daddy was the one who taught me truth and love. Happy Father's Day my Sweet Daddy. If any man is in Heaven I know you are, for you, with all your faults, were still the most Christ-like man I have ever known

A lovely and loving tribute to your father, Belle; most apt and timely when you posted it and of course, meaningful forever. Love and best wishes,

Regis

How fortunate you were to have a loving and caring father, I was not that lucky.

Always,

Deborah

You had a most wonderful father. Reminded me of the time I took on the task of mowing a 93-year-old man's yard. Another neighbor, Herb Morrison of the Hindenburg fame who was 72 at the time, brought him groceries and his mail every day from the mailbox on the road in front of his property. Unfortunately, I was forced to move away and don't know how long he was able to stay in his own home before he died.

My father was the kind that never said bad words about other people, was very generous, and always willing to lend a helping hand. I wasn't around as he got older, but I do recall that he did look in on friends and help them out whenever he could.

Some of your father rubbed off on you and it shows.

Ron

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
