I have to agree with CJ and everyone else...your love for science, for life, nature, and the countless wonders inherent in all shines brilliantly through your words...which flow so easily and perfectly, Leland.
In contrast to the rest of the animal kingdom's statistics, you are one in a billion Leland. This encompassing article shows the stately virtue of life, which covers the planet earth like a gentle spring rain. Your computational virtuosity and simplistic engineering sensibilities lead us toward an elegant solution represented by nature's endless bounty.
I alllllllllmost hesitated to read this, but then had to laugh out loud with your spot on delivery! How sad: we study the "lesser" creatures, but can't figure out the opposite sex...........well done, Leland! Glad I stopped by...this was the climax to my day! :)
I have to laugh at how we are so fasinated with the reproductive processes of animals and know so little of our own. We wipe out the wild elephant while overpopulating his range with ivory hungry bipeds.
I would propose that elephants do it that way because, at one point it favored their survival. Did wooley mammoths die out because their sperm froze and had to wait until spring to thaw out?
We laugh at premature ejaculation, but my marriage and family teacher worned us that it often results in unwanted children.
I too have to second CJStevens! Leland this is breathtaking. I don't know how you do it. Passing on such a plethora of info poetically is amazing to me!
(Makes one think of why, in the human species, "withdrawal" isn't such an effective solution after all... LOL!) Seriously, though, my dearest friend, here is one more delightfully rendered piece of information. I love those National Geographic documentaries (just watched one about hippos, and, like the elephants, they too descend from the same ancestor as the whales) and I love your vivid, good-humoured, beautifully written accounts of nature's curiosities - the first, as the latter, entrancing sources of knowledge that help us better understand and appreciate this fascinating universe we live in, as well as all the other beings we share it with. So, an "elephant-sized" (a fully grown one, LOL!)thanks to you, along with lots of {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}} and love.

Explore the mystery of how nature makes unexpected gifts of creative wonders to an unsuspecting caregiver one late night and early morning in southeastern Georgia, USA.
Your mind is a marvel, too.
