Beam Me Up Gently, Please

Sperm and eggs are no longer the only types of cells that can be used in reproduction.

Now double helix of chromosomes
Can be propagated from somatic homes!
This breaking news is yet another plank
Of evidence for evolution’s high rank

In life’s relentless drive for avenue.
Before, like water, seeking lower venue,
Now, like electrons in silicon path,
Chaperoned by science and higher math.

Is biology changed with these findings?
Will science, ethics get new unwindings?
No. Life reproduction, as we know the craft,
Simply adds to sex, skills of dna graft.

Next step in this breathless chain
Of progress in the bionic plane,
Could be an intracellular grafting fight,
Over genes being spliced left and right.

Will dna engineering resemble TV function,
Dna shattered in pixel-like reduction,
Subsequent reassembly in designer tone,
Here a piece added, there gone?

If so, life, full circle, has haunting refrain:
Lonely molecules joined for symbiotic gain,
Now systemic dna is broken apart —
And deftly reconstituted, a la carte!

Leland, very well written. The world moves at such a fast pace that most technologies tend to pass us by without our awareness. We become obsolete at birth. I wonder, will teleportation ever become reality. That's enough thinking for today. Beam me up Scotty.

Darwin's Blind Spot by Frank Ryan

The symbiotic pattern of evolution is everywhere and allows us a very different and fascinating window into the way symbiotic viruses work, since all viruses are symbiotic, including those involved in our human reproduction.
