The scene here has changed, but I still remember my friends from back then.

Poem Artwork

Sickly view reveals with a start:

Tall friends gone now—I played a part.

Felled one by one, bodies askew lay

Awaiting severance, to be hauled away

And divided by the foot for timber and board

To make a home for a strange new hoard

Who will never know, will lose no slumber,

How stately before they were lumber.

With Joyce Kilmer they will not agree

That things aren’t lovelier than a tree,

Celebrate home with gifts from a shower,

Think not of felled trees once did tower.

But I, with vivid memory still alive

See their dim shadows arrive

To save energy and shade the sun,

And cool the yard for play and fun.

They were mighty, each a gorgeous hulk,

Gave joy just being, with shape and bulk,

Bedding for squirrel and shelter for bird,

Sweeter songs you’ve never heard.

But they grabbed the winds and held at bay

A mighty storm that came our way,

And turbulently bent to, then bent fro,

Were still standing when the wind let go.

That I pondered, and thought it wise,

Gave traitorous order for their demise,

Killed the friends I had come to know

Fearing new winds would lay them low.

The trees in my home are just wood—

Probably were tall, I’m sure quite good,

But to know them as friends I did not—

They didn’t live on my own house lot.

Wood in my home that I’ve come to love,

Should stay below and remain above,

Not be scattered and twisted free

Of blueprint order by a falling tree.

But sickly view still stabs like a dart,

Tall friends gone now, and I played a part.

Felled one by one, bodies askew lay

Awaiting severance, to be hauled away.

As I read this it reminded me of all my fallen crazy friends who I departed from before I met their same fate. Then the trees hit me. This was great to read. I too love trees. My wife and I have this spot we just go and sit in among these tall pine trees. GEM

Fantastic description of these stately friends from your past. It hits no harder than when it hits home.

God, I got chills at the end of this piece, Leland... I've always felt trees have spirits, souls of a sort. You've captured the essence of that spirit. :)

A tree almost crashed me to million pieces the other day...strong wind did it.....it missed me by 2 meters...and this is no joke....right in front of the "Stromboli Hotel" close to my home...As I was approuching the entrance after picking up the pigfood from them...this tree (Blue Gum Tree)just splashed into pieces right in front of me..some of hit my car....but thank God I could stop in time...or I was dead...the tree was about 120cm in diameter.....but I still love them...no doubt about that....I like the pic on your write........home sweet home.....or not!!

Leland, I consider this a tribute to our tree friends! You've expressed just a drop, yet a tragedy that keeps happening to this land. Thank you!

Boy, trees are precious anywhere these days. Think of the devastated forests in South America. Well done. A terrific read.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson
