Fallen Stars

One night as I sat looking at a brilliant starry sky,
I saw one fall away and it made me wonder why.
Just what it is that makes a falling star lose its hold?
Perhaps there is more to it than the stories we’ve been told.

Its been hanging there for ages shining bright there in the night,
Then all at once it breaks away to begin it’s fiery flight.
At breakneck speed the little star streaks toward the ground.
Then in an instant it is over the star is gone without a sound.

I wonder if a little star gets tired hanging there,
Shining down upon us wondering if we really even care.
Could it be that when we make a wish the small stars just wont do.
And we call upon the brighter stars to make our wish come true .

Could it be these little stars are the only ones that fall?
The ones that go unnoticed because they are so small.
Perhaps they feel it’s worth it to give up their place up high,
To be noticed for a moment as they streak across the sky.

If all these streaks across the sky could somehow be erased,
And all the fallen stars could be put back there in their place.
When each and every star was hung back up there one by one,
I’m sure that then the nighttime sky would far outshine the sun.

The next time that you look into a starry sky at night,
Try to find the little star that isn’t quite as bright.
Make a wish upon this star and maybe after all,
Because of you this may be a star that didn’t fall.

The north star was really big this
morning at day break, and I was
wondering how the devil it stays
up there?

When we were little, we were told that a falling star was a new baby being born down on earth....
This was just pure magic, loved it.

An utter delight to read, Jack! :) I've been known to wake my kids up in the middle of the night, drag them out into the chilly air, with hot cocoa and blankets, to watch the falling of meteorites...hey, the Leonids are from Nov. 15-19 or so, these are my favorite ones!! Thank god your lovely piece reminded me, I might have missed them!! :D Thanks, Jack!!
