PTSD

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

My attempt to describe the way flashbacks make you feel. Before I went through crisis- and traumatherapy I had no memories at all of having been anyone else but this twisted ball of fear and anguish. When I came out on the other side I was surprised to find my happy memories again and to realise that I am this lifeloving, happy through- and through person that is never far from laughter.

Poem Artwork

Darkness all around
inside
pictures without sound
they're
flashes of horror
and
deepest sorrow

Life a burden weighs a ton
the
person I once was is gone
no
recollection of her at all
who
was I before the fall

I
would claw my eyes out
if
I could
but
help it would
not

These images are stamped on
my
brainstem, even with eyes gone
it
would not make a dent
in
this horror show re-sent

My chest a coffin filled
with
deepest sorrow instilled
been
inprinted for years
these
my darkest fears

It is a nightmare I cannot shake
from
it's horrors I cannot wake
am
I strong enough to live through
these
memories I know to be true
to
emerge on the other side of dark
finding
that elusive little spark
that
will shine a light into the dark?

An profound and heart rending personal
description of what you experienced before your
therapy..
I am so happy for you that you found your true
happy self again…

While I was a bit depressed for time after becoming paralyzed, I have no recollection of PTSD, except a bit of impatience with others who seem to be wrapped up in their psychological problems rather than just moving out and being free. It's really easy to be free and happy. I'm glad that you found that happiness from the way that you describe both the way you feel in prose and in this poem.

A difficult and deeply personal subject deftly handled.
