Sweet Vesuvius

A Thursday change of pace

Sweet Vesuvius

Thy dormant dreams shroud our future curiosity

Encrusting the parched tentacles that cling to our weary bones

Whose cruel anchorage strips the flesh rendering skin to frozen ash

Dark tears to liquid stone 

Breath immortal taints the sky whose bloodshot sun concedes the day

To the rivulets of the heart

Dust bowls gone awry

Without hope

Without fear

Without love

Betray me not Sweet Vesouuios

Towering Son of Zeus

Your smoldering cauldron enflames the moon’s eye

As your belly

Retches death

Without compassion

Without concern

Without atonement

To the lost souls of Herculaneum

We all live in the shadow of death. Herculaneum chose the rich soil. the view, and the port for a rich deadly, life.

Then...you walk towards the beach and will hear a soft voice of a maiden singing "Return to Sorrento", echoes of a long time ago happy Herculaneum.
Great one, you are now joining Orpheus poets and as Walt would had said, Captain, my Captain.

Mythology suits you well, Patrick. It's apparent the underlying message has not gone unnoticed by me and the way I see it..."death" does come to those who are without compassion, without concern, and without atonement. We all have to atone for our sins, whether they are deliberate or not...betrayal has its price and most of the time, the price is too high to pay. Excellent poetry and thanks for letting us see another genre from you. Blessed Be.

It is a sad, yet powerful reminder of the power of nature and how she will react without regard. I have photographs of Pompeii everywhere...

Almost Herculian the depths and heights of the souls dark spaces, with just enough spark and glimmer to light some distant path.
