The ancient shepherds met their maker

“Why do you seek to corral the gifted?” the great one asked

Those creatures whose only life is to serve the mountain

Sentinel of clouds

Keeper of snowdrifts

Guardian of the winds

We seek only a few, for our own survival, master

No more than a few

In return, we will honor them, and you

With this

Our highest tribute

And the great one was pleased

Fast forward a few thousand years..........

“Excuse me sir.” That tag was for a single take, not six, and the racks I’m afraid are all significantly below the legal limit. I’m afraid that I’m going to have to impose a little bit of a fine here. See you next year.

Uncovered

stalking
chukar partridge,
cottontop quail out
of bounds, poaching,

in a mid-winter
nosy survey where
he shouldn't
have been,

Durango
hiker buried on
the San Juan ridge,
his backpack filled with
leather hardened jerky and
junk mail,

avalanche
dog smelled
less of his jerky,
more of his rank soul,

the more
he dug, the
more he uncovered,

the ravens
were eager to
pick his bones clean,
the wolves had already
been there, canis lupus
incisors are what slay the
reprobate,

avalanche
revealed the
cause of death,
the wolf lie beside
the human carcass
with particles of karma
attached, fate intervened,
retribution feeds off disease,
the wolf died of rabies, the man
of greed.

I actually had to read it twice, (I'm a slow learner) but then the little light came on...nice work!

Cheers,
Dan

Through the Amazon by S. Oliver Eldridge

The drug called "The Shari" has been used for vision quests over many years. But, when all the rivers start drying up, the tribe must send a young hunter named Tomás on a much more important trip through the Amazon.
