MY CAPTAIN!

...one of many who cling to their faith and to the captain of their souls, while making this 'sure', but often rough, journey home...

Poem Artwork

Even when I embarked with my ticket for Beulah Land

the waters were rough...the ship reeling to and fro

But the tried and true Captain, with piercing eyes...

full of love and compassion, bid me 'come'...and I did so

~~~~
The Captain, He did not lie or compromise with
forecasting an uneventful calm and smooth sail
I remember He said, there are going to be hard times
journeying will be difficult...winds and waves will assail
~~~~

He said, at times you'll feel the ship is about to sink

it'll seem like everyone on board will be destroyed

But I promise you...if you'll only obey and hold on

our destination will be reached ...eternal bliss enjoyed

~~~~
I will not disembark ...He gave me His Word...
I will not, He said, leave you or abandon ship
I'll stay with this vessel which carries 'precious' cargo
for in My Saving Blood...each parcel has been dipped
~~~~

So when bombarded with unmerciful torrents

that rage against the hull and flood the deck

I hear the Captain calling out bidding me...hold on!

stay with the ship! it won't go down...nor will it wreck!

~~~~
Obeying orders I cling fiercely...ship tossed & turned
soul drenched & battered with the punishment of the air
And I know if I was mapping the path of this course
I'd have turned back long ago...leaving His promises there
~~~~

But in the black of day the lightning flashes...I see Him

still in charge steering...standing staunchly at the helm

Seeing through the darkness...He is undaunted, yet...

strong and masterful ...the waves cannot overwhelm

~~~~
Weakened...against the pressures of the elements
I make my way to Him... He turns and smiles
It's there, I know...I'll stay with Him until the end
as He's brought me safe so far...miles upon miles
~~~~

I am content where 'ev I may go...surely, He'll abide

moreover...so grateful for His loving care, but then...

He has never lost a ship, albeit...forever and far beyond

He is my Lord, my Savior...Jesus! He is...My Captain!

Thank you for the reminder. We both have the SAME Father in Heaven.
We have so much in common. Just as there are many kinds of flowers in the earth all need sun and water. All rely on Our Father.

Amen

It takes courage in this post-Christian age for one to stand against the currents and declare that one is not "the captain of my fate ... the master of my soul" as does the writer of "Invictus," and say instead that one's captain is Jesus. The OT reference though is troubling given it refers to God and your poem refers to Jesus. A NT reference seems more appropriate such as Matt. 14:22-36. I look forward to reading more of your work.
