I think we all hope and wonder if next year will be better when we are grappling with the passing one...you ask the question eloquently, and surprisingly timed as I think many of us have these types of reflections near the end of the calendar year...I believe that small surprise just makes the entire poem more interesting, and Fall is notorious for heralding the end, and depression as the sunlight is withdrawn.
