Copper's Winter Sunrise
by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen
It is dark, most mornings,
when she rises, she prefers it
that way, sets her alarm
to awaken early, Winter's sunrise
belongs to her.
(Copper Mountain's town,
of ups and downs,
the frantic pace
to win the race,
precludes the dawn,
as worker's yawn
and end their fight,
to sleep in light.)
Night is dimming, ebbing,
daytime's calling...she feels it,
the calmness of predawn,
the hope of a new day still
belongs to her.
(Headlight's swing low
and taillights glow,
leaving mine's gate
and metal's fate,
to daytime crews
singing the blues,
of copper's due,
it's nothing new...)
First hidden rays, touching
horizon's elevated level,
cause heavenly clouds to blaze
with pink and gold, rebirth
belongs to her.
(The chill of the night
on mineral's might,
shivers the bold
who shoulder the load,
as night after day
mountain's eaten away,
time has no meaning
in copper's gleaning.)
The string of low clouds
lose their vibrant hues, become
ordinary, sun shafts through
window's keep, but, Time's memory
belongs to her.
