The Wanderin Man Saga continues - Winterin in the Florida Keys

Poem Artwork

WANDERIN MAN
“THE KEYS”

I wandered out of Michigan
plannin on winterin in the Keys,
after a stop in Atlantic City
visitin with my favorite squeeze.

I’ll arrive before the “Snowbirds”
lookin to find myself a job
I don’t want fer much,
but I refuse to become a slob.

I’ll play a little gitar,
maybe fill in with the band
I’ll drink a lota beer
stick my toes into the sand.

Winterin in the Keys
is my way of avoidin the world.
It’s been years since my last reveille
when I watched as the flag unfurled.

Ya, I once wore the uniform
always doin as I was told.
The biddin of Uncle Sam
is what taught me to avoid the cold.

Now each year I visit Key West
though I winter at Marathon Key,
seems always takin orders
had got the best of me.

These days I don’t much worry
about which is right er wrong,
seldom do I make a fist,
I’ve learned to jist git along.

Mostly I jist roll with the punches,
livin on the fly,
each day’s a new adventure
as I practice gittin by.

Tonight I’ll have some drinks
maybe shoot a few games of pool,
I’ll seek a wannabe hustler,
then I’ll take his ass to school.

to be continued.....

I spent a couple of spring breaks in the keys with college buddies in the early 70's scuba diving and camping out. Coral is HARD to sleep on. Enjoying. Patrick

Reads like a plan, man. Contrary to Jerry, I think you're seeking something else. My twin brother has spent the last two Januarys in the Keys and finds them just fine. If you can play the guitar, all the better.

Ah, you can have the the keys, Richard. I wandered down there a few time on my own, but I think what I saw I had already outgrown. Old men still trying to rock out with Easy Rider and all that went with it. Couldn't handle it, in face, I have a sour taste of the whole damn state, but the keys taste the worse. That's just me. Everybody has their own thing. Enjoying the series, don't let this downer put you in a bad mood, buddy.

Delightful! I like your style. Reading this is like watching a man in comfortable clothes (albeit unsloppy) be himself with an admirably comfy smile. ~~ Diana
