We have decided to devote our time to help the lives of animals. The animals are very dear to our hearts, and it saddens us whenever we learn of any cruelty, exploitation, and abuse toward them ’’ Said Chairman of SOMARCO Mr. Heybe Dahir Barale’ Adding that animals are suffering every minute, every day... in Somalia. We need to show respect and to be compassionate to all beings. Like us, animals deserve fair treatment.
This was a speech delivered by the chairman on the occasion of the World Animal Week in Somalia. I was invited to attend a reception at SOMARCO Office to read this poem. On behalf of the world animal lovers and animal protection agencies Mr. Haybe is sending his best wishes to all who assisted his organization especially Director General of World Society For the Protection of Animals (WSPA) Major General Peter Davies.

They are abused
They are tortured
They are exploited
They are fraught
They are hunted
They are caged
They are killed

They are endangered
They are burdened
They are the animals
They are the birds
They are the chicken
They are the ostriches

They are cats and dogs
They are the horses
They are the donkeys
They live in constant fear
No one gives them protection
No one gives them love
At risk they are in all times
They lead at stressful life

They live in a shattered nation
In a nation where there is no state
which crumbled over itself mysteriously
Calling for help from under its rubble
Having all its institutions collapsed
Where will this disaster leave our animals?

Who will protect the dogs and cats
When people do not know of their rights?
When they beat and abandon their pets
When they deprive them of their freedom
When their culture despises dog ownership

But fortunately Somali Animal Rights Community
A sole animal welfare organization in Somalia
An affiliate of World Society for protection of Animals
Has at last stood for the rights and protection of animals

In Mogadishu they are mobilizing our communities
To make them aware of animal rights
To assess and monitor their survival status
To lobby for the ban of animal exportation
They rise to defend the rights of voiceless creatures
They are the pioneers of the animal welfare in Somalia
